The Homecoming that Wasn't Oklahoma State 45 Huskers 14 Print E-mail

Well here we were Saturday morning in front of the 287th consecutive sell-out for the 2007 Homecoming game. In front of the last Huskers National Championship team, the 1997 squad, along with their greatest coach Dr. Tom Osborne. Playing a team, Oklahoma State that had not won in Memorial Stadium since 1960, the table was set right?

WRONG! Well talk about a MAJOR disappointment. 45 to 14 says it all. 31 to nothing at halftime, 86 to 20; that is the combined score of the Huskers last 2 conference games. I am glad that I did not get the game on pay per view; it would have been a waste of my hard earned money. Not since I was 2 years old, back in 1958 have my Huskers suffered such a humiliating defeat at home, that loss was to Missouri 31 to 0. This is the first time in the teams 118 years of existence, since the team was called the Bugeaters, that they have they allowed 4 different teams to score 40 or more points in a single season. This team has given up on the season, given up on the coach and it looks like they have given up on themselves also.

These Cowboys averaged more than 8 yards per play in this game, and finished the game with 551 total yards. Oklahoma State was up 17 to nothing before the Huskers even had a first down. Fans were leaving this homecoming game before half time, which by the way, saw the Cowboys having the advantage 31 to 0. Thought we had a "chance" in the second half, well Sam Keller ended all thoughts of that on our first series with an interception. The only positive note I can mention in this article is that Freshman Quentin Castille rushed for his first 100 yard game, gaining 102 yards on 20 carries.

We Nebraska fans have seen our beloved Huskers gain national attention over the past 25 years for various streaks of the positive side. It looks like now we are about to set records that may be just as impressive on the losing side also. There is one thing that has become perfectly clear to this fan at this point of the season, Pederson and Callahan MUST GO. They have become a cancer that has now spread to the team, and if there is any hope at all of saving this team, the cancer must be removed as soon as possible. We have reached a point that is so low that even my bottom 5 rankings don't do it justice.

Frank Solich was fired by Pederson, which appears to be when the cancer first appeared, after completing a 9-3 season and gaining a bowl game invitation. Pederson, which of course is his right, decided that Solich was not going in the right direction, was not satisfied that the team was righting itself, even after Solich fired several long time Husker coaches in an attempt to make Pederson happy. Solich's record at time of his dismissal was 58-19 for a .753 winning percentage for 6 full seasons, an average season of 9-3, just slightly lower than Dr. Tom's 10-2 average record over his 25 seasons. Callahan's record, as it stand now after this game is 26-18 for a .590 winning percentage after 3 and a half seasons. This is Pederson's definition of "bringing the team back to the elite level".

Well I may not be a freaking genius, but I can tell when someone is "pissing on my head and telling me it is raining" and this is exactly what Pederson is doing. Pederson may be Nebraska born and bred, but if he seriously believes that Callahan is the man who can take Nebraska football back to the National title picture, he is really viewing the situation through "rose colored glasses". I know that the man is smarter than this, because the other sports at Nebraska have actually flourished during his tenure, including the woman's volleyball team who are the defending national champions. See; now look at what has happened, I am "pimping" freakin woman's volleyball. Damn it Pederson, wake up and do the right thing and get rid of Callahan, if you don't, you will be run out of town with him. Show us all that you have what it takes to make the tough decision.

I may be back later in the week to give you my insight to the game against the Texas A & M Aggies, which was the Big 12 team that I had predicted, would have the problems and be firing their coach, which still remains a possibility, but right now it looks like Dennis Franchione is safer than Callahan. Go GBR.
