It was very early on, in July as a matter of fact, when the Nebraska Cornhuskers got a verbal commitment from a nationally rank high school player. Quarterback Cody Green from Dayton Texas is now showing everyone why he is ranked as a top ten ranked player by both rivals and scout. This past Saturday, December 6, 2008 Green led the Dayton Broncos into a quarter final game against Brenham for a spot in the Texas High School State football semi-finals.
Green felt bad on Saturday, he had come into the game with a cold and some fans were fearing that he wouldn't be able to play, those folks just didn't know Cody that well. Early in the game Green ripped off a 60 yard run that should have been stopped for no gain at the line of scrimmage that put the Broncos up 21-7, after that 60 yard run, Green felt bad, it appeared to be too much for his body. He started throwing up on the sidelines, but for Cody, no problem. He just shrugged it off and continued the game. Brenham was playing a defense that was designed to take away Dayton's passing game by playing only 3 front linemen, who didn't even get into a 3-point stance. Because of this defense, Cody only passed for 71 yards and two touchdowns; however the defense was not effective against the run. Green finished the game with 21 carries for 259 yard and two touchdowns in leading the Broncos to a 42-21 drubbing over the Brenham Cubs to get Dayton into the Texas Class 4A-Division 2 semi-final game. So far in their previous four playoff games, Dayton has not been challenged, winning by at least 11 points in each game in their march towards the state title. For the season Green has passed for more than 2,600 yards and 29 touchdowns, completing 64% of his passes with only 5 interceptions. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. Standing an impressive 6 foot 4 inches tall and 225 pounds it is no wonder he was highly sought after by the Huskers as well as Texas A & M, Boston College, Stanford, Purdue, Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Alabama and Mississippi State. Dayton's record is 12-1 so far this season with their only loss coming in the second game of the season to fellow area playoff team Friendswood 42-21, who are playing in the 4A-Divison 1 semi-final game. This run by Dayton is great for Green, who missed all of last season with torn ligaments in his ankle that he suffered during the second game of the season. The injury occurred when he was running towards the sidelines to avoid a blitz, but didn't quite make it. Two players tackled Green and when he was falling down his right foot stuck in the turf and twisted, which caused the ligaments to shred. There was no ambulance at the game so Green had to get into his mother's car and drive to the closest hospital. After the surgery Green worked hard to rehab the ankle for this season. Even without Green Dayton was still an impressive team last year reaching the semi-finals before losing to the eventual state champion. Up next is 12-2 Kerrville-Tivy for a berth in the State championship game. Good job Cody and good luck against Kerrville.
