I watched three games Saturday and will do my best to describe what I saw. Remember, I watched as a fan, not as an expert.![]() YOUNGSTOWN STATE vs. OHIO STATE I saw a beat down which I guess is what I was supposed to see. As long as we go and watch these kinds of games, and the system remains what it is, then these are the games we are going to get. Youngstown State did nothing with the ball. I believe they were not only shut out, but had less than 100 total yards. The Buckeyes did tackle well in space and seemed to play fast and disciplined. Special teams looked good. Not every day you have two kickers that hit 50 yard plus field goals. Ray small looked like a punt returner. On offense the Buckeyes sucked in the red zone. Bryant Browning had some problems at right tackle. Todd Boeckman played well at QB and hit some beautiful long passes. I did not see the receivers get much separation. Terrelle Pryor will be fun to watch. After Beanie, the ability level of the running backs seemed pedestrian. Beanie is an important member of this team. From a scheme standpoint the Buckeyes were very vanilla in their approach. UTAH vs. MICHIGAN I found this game to be fascinating. From a coaching standpoint, do you play to your strong points, or do you play your system regardless? For Michigan it seems the answer is the system or bust and bust is what you got. The positive for Michigan that I saw was a defense that got off their ass and played some ball in the second half after taking the first half off. Utah in the first half moved the ball at will. Was the improvement better execution, better conditioning, scheme adjustments, or Utah playing not to lose? Don’t know the answer to that, but the difference in the two halves was there. Concerning Utah I don’t know what to say. On defense they looked good, but consider…… On offense they were very impressive for one half but as a team they tried very hard to give the game away. Utah played some very stupid football and can’t continue to do that. Michigan did not play offense. Quarterback play was not good. Line play was not good. I wondered about the selection of running backs. Freshman played, veterans subbed. I just don’t know about that. Tight ends, a strength, were non existent. Wide receivers played well. I don’t know about their blocking or route running. You can’t help but think about Notre dame’s 2007 season while watching Michigan. The big time difference is Notre Dame threw their young quarterback into the fray and he got a year of experience. I could not see either quarterback being able to run the spread in the way coach Rodriquez wants it run. It will be interesting to see as the year develops if Michigan goes to their strength or continues with the offense we saw Saturday. ILLINOIS vs. MISSOURI I was in and out on this game, suffering from TV malaise. What this game reminded me of was the Kansas/Missouri game of last year. Doesn’t anyone play defense? Offensively Missouri looked great and so did Juice Williams and the Illini, except Illinois is missing the running attack of last year. Regardless, Juice sure made some things happen. It was very entertaining to watch these two offenses. They made the defenses look silly. I might have heard Missouri returned 10 starters on defense. If that is true then the old saying comes in to play, the positive is we return 10 starters from last year and the negative is we return 10 starters from last year. The Illini miss J. Lehman. The safeties looked confused. In contrast to the Michigan defense I also might have seen some players taking plays off. Both teams will win games this year because of their offense. Neither team will make it to the promised land without better defensive play. I also wonder about the Illini kicking to Macklin. Seemed like playing with fire. It was a pleasure to watch both offenses especially after seeing some of the quarterbacking I saw this first weekend of college ball.
