Questions Regarding The Buckeyes Print E-mail

Less than 24 hours to kickoff. After another dismal national championship game the off season has kind of drug on. Thank God it is time for some football. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of arrest reports, whose weight room guru is the next coming, and which schools certain high school seniors will grace with an official visit. (Did you ever think you would care about what 17/18 year olds were doing that you didn’t have to pay for?)

Unfortunately we as fans have been duped into thinking the season starts now when in fact many of our teams are playing nothing but glorified scrimmages. Last I knew Notre Dame had only sold out two home games. Either the Irish fans are smart and only willing to spend their disposable income for real games, or they just don’t care. Be that as it may, this is the deal we are stuck with and yes-last night-I turned to channel 742 here in South Florida and low and behold, there was the Big Ten Channel. Thankfully I get to watch my Buckeyes on my couch as opposed to in a bar with a thousand distractions. Nope, don’t care we are suiting it up against Youngstown State, at least I get to watch the Buckeyes.

You start every season with questions. I will share my Buckeye questions with you.

1. I have to start with Terrelle Pryor. Hype is yesterday’s news. Time to play ball. We have been told Pryor will play. We have been told his role will not be as Tebow was used when he was a virgin. We shall see. My impression is Coach Tressel doesn’t want a wild card at any position and certainly not at the QB spot. How he is used will be interesting as will the reception Terrelle receives in the Shoe.

2. The defensive line needs to notch up their performance from last year. It will be hard to gauge until we play real competition, but these games are all we have. Control the line, and pressure with the front four. Can we do it? Will we be able to stop referring to some of our players from a potential standpoint and be able to cite performance instead? One game won’t answer this question, but it is a start.

3. Will special teams become special again, or will they be an adventure? I don’t know about you, but I like to be able to relax during most special team plays, not anxiously wondering what will happen next.

4. The defensive backfield has taken some injury and bad boy hits. Depth is not what we believed it would be. No reason not to have confidence going in to tomorrow with the starters, but again, quality depth needs to develop and am not sure at all where it will come from.

5. The linebacker crew is one hyped unit. From this vantage point we’re not real sure the hype has always been deserved. This year would love to see performance equal hype.

6. Is Bryant Browning the right tackle of the future or is he just temporarily guarding the spot? Will the rest of the line perform to potential or will we see false starts when we don’t need to. Will the coaches see enough of the second unit on film to figure things out for down the road when the inevitable need arises?
