Well time for all the talking is about over, as fall practice has come to a conclusion and we are now into the first game week of the 2008 Nebraska season with first year head coach and Husker Nation savior Bo Pelini leading the way back to the promise land and our "birth-right" of playing in national championship games. Well maybe not that last part, but Pelini definitely has the masses "Fired up" for this season that is c One thing that many of you may not understand, but Pelini was hired to do more than win football games, he was brought here to restore "Husker football". Yes winning in Lincoln is important, but more important is to win the right way, the "Husker" way. It is the shaking of hands at the coffee shop in Columbus Nebraska, or talking Husker football around the water cooler in Cook Nebraska. It is using words such as effort, attitude, or determination. It is about getting the players to buy into the belief that football is more than a game here in Nebraska, it is a way of life, and it is about a stadium that becomes the third largest city in the state on game day. It's also about reenergizing a walk-on program so that those players feel that they are just as important to Husker football as the scholarship payers, by treating them that way. This fall came saw longer, harder, grueling and more physical practices than had been seen in 4 years or more, it had to be done. Much more time was spent outside on the grass field, rather than inside in air conditioned facilities. These players had gotten soft, overweight and underprepared. Many players commented that they lost 6-10 pound this month, in fact sophomore receiver Niles Paul estimated he lost six pounds during some practice sessions. Last year, he said, he didn't lose anything. This year one thing we will see different for certain compared to the previous four years is a team that is in top game condition, a team that won't wear out by the end of the third quarter. Now what else can we look for this coming season.
Now on the defensive side of the ball, will the Blackshirts be back? It is interesting that here we are on Monday the week prior to kickoff and the Blackshirts have not yet been awarded. Keep in mind that this was also a long time-honored tradition that begun back in the late 60's that Callahan and company kind of stomped into the ground; players who were awarded this honor cherished this award. Would you like some insight to this belief? How about from this year's returning defensive back coach Marvin Sanders, a former Blackshirt himself. This happened earlier this month at one of the first fall practices. The 40-year-old coach talked about the Blackshirt tradition. He spoke with passion about the pride it continues to bring him. Sanders told the defenders about his clear memory of the day he received the black practice jersey that signifies a starting role on the NU defense. He recalled one evening after a poor practice of how he sat in the locker room and felt bad because he let his team down.
"It's a mind-set," Sanders said. "It a belief. It is determination, heart and effort. That love for Nebraska football. All those things are what a Blackshirt is made of." This season's defense I believe will have the passion back in their play, although it may take at least a month for the players to gain the level of knowledge needed to play with the passion, so don't be surprised to see several big plays given up, until that knowledge becomes second nature. I found an article last week written based on EA Sports 2009 NCAA football for the Huskers. The results of the simulated season were to say the least one for all Husker fans to be excited about. With the games being played on an X-box 360 the Huskers rolled through their first seven games before finally losing to Oklahoma by 11, not to be discouraged the Huskers then rolled off three more wins in the regular season and then took revenge on the Sooners in the Big 12 championship game 27-24. They closed this improbable season with a 45-28 Fiesta Bowl win over Clemson finishing up 13-1 and ranked number 2 in the nation behind Southern Cal. Ah dreams. Now GBR and watch for a game preview later this week and if you are lucky, my first "bottom 5 ranking.
