While the American dollar is plummeting in value and so with it, supposedly, our wordly ability to evoke respect and power to leverage other powers such as China, after sitting around watching the Olympics today I have have one thing to say; lick 'em, like 'em and spank off!
The 4x100 men's swimming relay just ended and saw The United States of America upset the Frenchies who were the smack talking favorites, as Alain Bermard seriously had greasy fries shoved down his throat when Jason Lezak caught him from behind to upset the faves. This was the one event where Michael Phelps was not expected to win. Now, a record 8 gold medal finish almost seems probable. Last night I was in a crowded bar as Phelps owned the 400-meter individual medley, winning his first gold to the cheers of "USA" by a bunch of proud Orlando drunks. I awoke in time for an absolute treat this morning, as the men's basketball team took on Yao Ming and China in the most watched basketball game ever. China hung tight before losing by 31. Team USA looked great. Lebron James is, without a shred of doubt, the greatest player in the world and an absolute freak. James on a fast break is the scariest thing on the basketball floor I've ever witnessed. If any team could nab any player from the United States to play for them, they'd all pick Lebron James. Anybody who disagrees, needs to get over their man crush for Kobe Bryant. Hell, if I had to choose between Michael Jordan or James, I'd take James. I'm the biggest MJ homer ever but it's abundantly clear to me that Lebron is on his way to pure domination. If team USA does not take gold I'll be shocked. I'm not a huge fan of Jason Kidd being on the team at the moment because he's past his prime but he is still solid. Carmelo Anthony seems out of his element. But all in all, this Olympic basketball squad, dream team or not, is the best team ever assembled. The '92 team was the show among shows but 2008 has been slowly marinated to perfection. The United States female gymnastics squad has some ballers. Injuries could slow their progress. Why only one alternate? Serioiusly, the men's squad faces injury issues too. Seems pretty lame. More detailed, hardly investigated opinions to follow...
