I'm white, old, and
confused. I see Calvin Magee is in the news again. For those of you who
do not know Calvin Magee is the assistant head football coach for the University of Michigan. Prior to accepting the position at Michigan, Magee coached for seven years at West Virginia. At West Virginia Magee was the running backs coach, then offensive coordinator, and last year was the assistant head coach.
With the above pedigree, and knowing the success enjoyed by West Virginia's offense over the past years one would think Calvin would be ripe for a head coaching position. Why not West Virginia? Hell, they needed to find a coach after Rich Rodriguez left town. Why not Calvin? I guess Calvin didn't get the job because he is black. In 2008 the country may be ready for a black president, but West Virginia is not ready for a black head football coach. To give you some background, on January 20, Magee told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that an "unidentified" West Virginia administrator pointed to his skin and offered race as a reason why Magee wouldn't have a legitimate chance at being a head-coach candidate at West Virginia. Per Magee this happened on December 21. Subsequent to all of this Magee has asked the University to conduct an investigation. He has also asked the Black Coaches & Administrators to intercede in the University investigation being conducted by the Office of Social Justice. Per the University and the BCA this is all ongoing. Based upon the above, couldn't we save some time here and just declare the University guilty? The University has to be guilty. Calvin didn't get the job. Look at bball. Huggins was hired and he's a white guy. I'm willing to jump to conclusions as quick as the next guy. I can also connect the dots-the dots pointing to Calvin being screwed because of race. But, then you have to, if you want to be fair-I said "if" you want to be fair, look at what Mr. Harvey would say is the "rest of the story". I will add proper analysis of the rest of the story requires common sense which is apparently lacking at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and writer Chuck Finder.West Virginia is upset by Pitt. West Virginia is not going to the National Championship game. The state is crushed. On December 17 Rich Rodriguez is introduced as Michigan's new head football coach. On December 17 Rich Rodriguez introduces Calvin Magee as Michigan's new assistant head coach. Now who screwed who here? If Calvin Magee wanted the head coach job at West Virginia why in the world would he accept the job at Michigan? A little common sense here. Whether or not you agree is immaterial, but common sense should tell anyone that if you take up arms with one viewed as a traitor, that makes you a traitor also. This isn't brain surgery people. The state and the University was and is pissed at Rich Rodriguez. So, again with the common sense thing, if you cast your lot with Rich Rodriguez you are part of the problem here and not part of the solution. What can't you see here Calvin? Just like we tell our kids. Calvin, take responsibility for your own actions and don't try blaming others. You are the problem here. Your actions and conduct eliminated you from employment consideration, not your skin. You want to question the conduct of others? Maybe you should revisit the counsel you were getting from your agent. Yes your agent being the same agent Rich Rodriguez has. Who was your agent working for? Whose best interest was he working for? And Calvin, while I am at it, what's up with the "unidentified" West Virginia administrator? You talked with the guy. You have a problem with what the guy said then call him out. Quit screwing around talking about investigations. I'm sure Calvin you are looking for a free contributor to Deathrattle to give you some advice, but here it is. Man up, admit your actions cost you a shot at the job. Allow the Universities Office of Social Justice to do what ever it is they do. Allow the BCA to concentrate its time and resources on matters that are real and demand its attention. Quit casting unwarranted aspersions at the University that paid you for seven years.

45- I was not sure where you were going with this but I have to agree. Good read man. It seems the WVU handled everything wrong but only in reaction to their former coaches handling everything wrong. And like an old divorced couple, none of these people can stop the bitching. And how does Michigan feel in all of this? You'd think they'd want their staff 100% focused on the task at hand rather than the past. All that said, I think there are just 7 black head coaches in college right now (D1A). In all of sports right now, that may be the biggest contrast when factoring in percentages of players who are black. |

| if he had wanted the job,he would have had it. He would have been the one on the sidelines at the Fiesta as well. Hell,he showed he did not want that when he didn't even hesitate to hop on the plane with Rich. His agent is the same Rich uses,Mike Brown. They're just stirring this up for the lawsuit against rr,but it won't work. | |

"It seems the WVU handled everything wrong but only in reaction to their former coaches handling everything wrong. And like an old divorced couple, none of these people can stop the bitching. " 45- That is pure BS. WVU did nothing wrong. All the crap is being stirred by the RR Camp to try to get out or lower the buyout. Just honor you contract and pay up Rich! |

Lloyds - Just curious here....What has WVU done that is wrong? Filing a preemptory judgement because they were concerned rr would not honor his agreement? Sounds justified to me, since he DID NOT honor his agreement. Or maybe not interviewing Magee? Above writing bears that one out? Not talking to ESPN? No brainer there. Now maybe some fans haven't done everything perfectly. I'll give you that. Just state it that way. |

This entire mess makes WVU look bad. You have former coaches crying racism. You have the whole shread gate scandal. You have the entire WVU fan base ready to jump off a cliff for awhile. You have death threats to RR. All of this makes the Mountaineers look bad. I'm not saying WVU is at fault for anything, but collectively this could have all been handled much better. The whole Rodriguez mess (and he is a WVU alum) could have been avoided in the first place if communication and relations had been better. |
