2009 Buckeye recruiting Offers Print E-mail

{mosimage} Our college football coaches get no rest. One recruiting season ends-except for the Buckeyes & TP, and the 2009 recruiting season moves into full swing. We have attempted to compile a list of the various juniors that have received OSU offers. Various sources have been used to put this list together including Scout, Rivals, and Bucknuts. To try towards consistency, we are presenting this information to you using the rankings and stats-height, weight, and forty times- of Scout.com where available.

Outstanding offers out there are:

James Jackson-James is from Michigan. He plays WR. He is 5-11/175/4.31
Cory Adams-Cory is from Arizona. He plays DT. He is 6-3/275/4.86. He is rated a 4-star prospect.
Dion Sims-Dion is from Michigan. He plays TE. He is 6-5/230/4.60. He is rated a 4-star prospect.
Eric Shrive-Eric is from Pennsylvania. He plays OT. He is 6-7/280/5.10. He is a 4-star prospect.
Carlos Hyde- Carlos is a running back from Florida.
Chris Watt- Chris is an OG from Illinois. He is 6-4/270.
Dorian Bell-Dorian is a 5-star LB from Pennsylvania. He is 6-1/220/4.59.
Marcus Hall-Marcus is an OT from Ohio(Glenville). He is a 4-star and is 6-5/293/5.35.
James Green-James is a WR.
Petey Smith-Petey is a MLB hailing from Florida. He is 6-0/248/4.87. He is a 4-star prospect.
Melvin Fellows-Melvin is a DE hailing from Ohio. He is a verbal commit to Illinios.
Kraig Appleton-Kraig is a WR from East Saint Louis.
Darrell Givens-Darrell is a CB from Maryland. He is 6-1/180/4.45.
Marlon Brown-Marlon is a WR from Tennessee. He is 6-5/200. He is a 4-star recruit.
Craig Drummond-Craig is a DE from Illinois. He is 6-5/260.

Considering the verbals already received, the Bucks have 17 players they can yet take. From what we know the Buckeyes have offered one running back. None were taken in 2008. Mo and Chris Wells will both be gone after the 2009 season. Certainly the Buckeyes will want two running backs in the 2009 class. Hyde would fit the bill as a power back. No slashers have yet been offered.

No quarterbacks have been offered. With the Pryor saga continuing, who knows. We would guess with a Pryor commit the Bucks would still want to recruit a QB in this class. Without TP the Bucks will need to scramble. Relationships between the prospects and the coaches are developing now so the coaching staff we would perceive is at a bit of a disadvantage at this time. With the right word from TP we guess this is a problem the coaches can live with.

Other than above stated we don't see any recruiting emergencies. If TP comes aboard the Bucks will have positioned themselves pretty well to make a run. This class will need to compliment last years. Quality throughout the roster would be what we perceive the recruiting goals to be.

Positions presently filled by 2009 verbals(anticipated positions) are:

LB-2

DT-1

CB-1

Safety-1

Oline-1

WR-1

FB-1

Recruiting is always interesting. Aggravating, but interesting. We will watch if recruiting is changed by the coaching change at Michigan. Historically OSU and Michigan battle over the same type of recruits. With the offensive changes at Michigan that could change a bit. How will wide receivers look at the RRod offense? Will Michigan appeal to tight ends, fullbacks, or power backs? Obviously the QB recruiting will be different. We see in the above list a tight end the Buckeyes are recruiting from Michigan. In 2008 Notre Dame successfully recruited two players from Ohio OSU wanted. Extenuating circumstances, or a trend? Illinois has risen from the trash heap of college football. Last year the Illini successfully recruited a baller from Ohio the Bucks wanted-from Glenville no less. OSU returned the favor by recruiting Garrett Goebels from Illinois. For 2009 the Illini have a verbal from Ohioan Melvin Fellows. This is a player the Buckeyes appear to really want. Looking at the above list we note a couple of players from Illinois the Buckeyes have offered. Time will tell.

Do we have any predictions? Nope, none at all. A wise man once said-maybe NevadaBuck-don't gage what a player will do by what he says. Watch what he does. Following that advice, watch what players attend junior days. Watch what players attend summer camps. Our coaching staff has a hall of fame average of getting verbals from players who get to the campus. If they don't get to the campus, you ain't getting them. Does anyone still think Oregon is getting TP?

Anyhow, we hope this list is of some help to you. We have plenty of time to stress out over this stuff, but thought you might want a head start. Go Bucks!

* Presumably we have missed some offers and will take your help on those we missed. Thanks.

Thanks for the breakdown man. I've been a bit slack on my 2009 info.

I'm thinking RR will do great recruiting at UM. They had a top 10 class this year and it will only get better. When you factor in that his classes were barely ever top 25 at WVU, then you know why he left.

OSU needs a top RB this year badly. They need a couple guys but certainly someone who can provide valuable backup minutes in year 1. Losing Devoe Torrence, who was a top 10 type of guy and an athletic freak, was killer.

If they somehow lose out on Pyror, which I highly doubt, than QB will be a pressing need too.

Remember when looking at the running backs the Buckeyes did redshirt a tailback this last year. That said I am sure 2 running backs are on the wish list for 2009. Did you see Michigan State has 2 verbals for 2009 that are both good running backs. PS-both were offered by Michigan.

No I did not know MSU was outrecruiting RB's over UM. Breaks my heart. smilies/smiley.gif

Even with the redshirted RB, that still only leaves 2 on scholly after Beanie and Mo Wells leave. The Buckeyes need 4 guys and always have a tough time sustaining descent numbers because of NFL early entries and transfers. RB's, as much as they are looked upon to be dependable, seem to lack dependability it seems for OSU.
