{mosimage}For most University of Michigan football fans, the hiring of Rich Rodriguez from West Virginia was seen as a welcome - if not surprising - pickup. The man who WVU fans now love to hate is known across the country for his high-octane spread offense and the ability to get his unheralded teams to the national stage.
Just yesterday, Detroit Free Press columnist Michael Rosenberg (one of my all-time favorite writers) threw some hot coals on the coach's fire pertaining to the departure of quarterback Ryan Mallett. It made me wonder just how many Michigan fans are in the same boat, questioning the ethics and practices of their new coach. Rosenberg referenced Rodriguez's quote of "I don't care," when he was asked at a basketball game where Mallett was going. "He's not playing for Michigan. I'm concerned with who's playing for Michigan. ... I recruited him once, I recruited him twice, and after the third call, I'm thinking, ‘OK, three calls is enough for me,'" he said. Now, Rosenberg says he's not sure whether RichRod has high morals and ethics like many coaches and friends surrounding him insist. Couple that with his fight against the buyout clause in his last contract and I'm not sure yet if all Michigan fans trust him or are just turning a blind eye to the whole situation. Heck, according to WVU, RichRod basically shredded every single piece of paper on campus, classified CIA documents and the last remaining original copy of the Declaration of Independence. Going forward, Rodriguez is clearly making Ann Arbor conform to his rules and is doing his best to firmly grab hold of the reins. He's already talking about a spring game "for the guys to have fun" (GASP!) and he dumped every last piece of old weight room equipment. They literally had a sale in the parking lot before the new benches and barbells came in. Whether or not Rodriguez is the unfortunate party in a whirlwind resignation/hire, he seems to be stepping up to the plate as far as his new program is concerned. The guy brought in a top-10 recruiting class Wednesday on three weeks of work. Not too shabby. If he somehow pulls in Pryor - not likely - most Michigan fans will be lined up at his door to have him forgive their sins and demonstrate his ability to walk on water. And West Virginians will continue marrying their cousins.

A well written piece other than the Hickville and Incest remarks. I'm still trying to figure out where those fit in. I suppose I could counter with some name calling of my own, but then again, why bother. It would do nothing to facilitate interstate relations. There is no wisdom in stereo-typing others, only ignorance. Now, to comment on your writing, I would venture to say that RR's character and moral compass will not be questioned as long as he is winning. Fans and administrators tend to look the other way if a coach is successful. To get a more accurate gauge of the U of M fan base, wait until the end of RR's first season and then ask how moral fans think him to be. |

Here's a couple examples of the high-class lifestyle of WVU fans. Congrats on ascending to the level of Michigan State! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojrMTBeuOw0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwM-JWLbh5M&feature=related I hope they don't film any movies in West Virginia because the talent seems pretty scarce... |

| I have made my feelings known re RRod in other pieces on Deathrattle. My feelings are if Michigan wanted a "win at any cost" coach, they probably got the right guy. If they wanted a coach with the "character" of a Bo or Lloyd, they got the wrong guy. My opinion- the Michigan Man myth is now just that-a myth. Square peg in a round hole. This is a man you don't turn your back on. Again, my opinion. Concerning West Virginia I believe the fans have every right to be pissed. Words from RRod's mouth were just that-words. | |

west virginia is not a top-tier athletic program. there is no talent in that state period and pennsylvania and ohio and places like that already are too far behind the big 10 programs for richrod to recruit there. you cant blame him for taking the job at michigan to further his career. he came as close as he was going to get to a national title there and it didnt work out. from that point on expectations would only get higher....and then rr would have to stoop to some more questionable tactics to keep it rolling. because in the end a kid is going to pick michigan, osu, and penn state and those other programs over WVU no matter what so national recruiting even with their success wasn't that easy. look at what he did taking in noel devine- that's the type of risk he had to take because that was the only way he was going to get more star players. the only thing that kind of rubs me the wrong way about rr is that WVU was his alma mater because im a very loyal person myself, but that's understandable still because of the opportunity |

| Itoffishul: I have no disagreement re your thoughts about the two jobs and the two programs. I do have a real problem how this all came down: 1. His signing of a new contract and the promises he made. 2. Leaving after the Pitt game. 3. Calling recruits before telling his team or the administration. 4. Michigan not talking to the WV administration. 5. Attempting to steal WV recruits. 6. Not paying the contract buyout. Do I think Michigan got a good football coach-yes. Do I think they got a good man-no. Ultimately I think Michigan will be hurt by this hire. Again, just my opinion. | |

1. makes sense but if there was a rift between him and the administration as reported then it's good he got out of there 2. he had no choice because um can't afford to wait that long to get a coach, recruiting is too important. 3. interesting, not sure on that one 4. hmm 5. those wv recruits said they werent considering the school, many of them, and some talked about wanting to follow rr. plus every coach does that now anyway. joe tiller bashed rr yet tried to steal recruits from CENTRAL MICHIGAN 6. sure |
