The recruitment of Texas superstar RB Sam McGuffie has been a year-long adventure, but as of last night the Michigan coaches thought they had a final confirmation from the youtube.com legend to play running back in their spread offense.

But McGuffie got cold feet and didn't show up to school on National Signing Day, and as of Rich Rodriguez's press conference he still hadn't sent in his letter-of-intent.

There are quite a few reasons as to why McGuffie might be wavering. First is his fear that the Michigan RB depth chart is suddenly a little too crowded. UM just got 4-star Trotwood Madison (Ohio) star Michael Shaw to switch from Penn State to the Wolverines, but most feel he'll play slot wide receiver instead of running back anyway.

Add him to UM's returning talent and it's a bit understanable. Even so, Rodriguez seemed disappointed that McGuffie decided not to honor his word and made reference to it in his presser, although he did acknowledge that these kinds of things happen all the time.

Another rumor is that McGuffie has a long-time girlfriend he is a bit afraid to leave down there in the Houston area, and yet another says that former QB Ryan Mallett had some not-so-flattering things to say about Rodriguez to his friend McGuffie.

One UM recruit, offensive tackle Dann O'Neill of Grand Haven, Michigan, said in an interview that McGuffie loves Ann Arbor and most likely will still come. But that does seem like speculation at this point as no one has been able to get ahold of McGuffie on Signing Day.

At any rate, UM fans are scratching their heads over what should have been a slam dunk commitment on a day of chaos that saw Terrelle Pryor delay his announcement yet again. UM fans will be on pins and needles waiting for these two big announcements to finally go down in the coming weeks.

	and completely ruined my article but as of 830 mcguffie faxed in his LOI i thought this was going to drag on for a while because he seemed torn. my bad. tomorrow ill give you my impressions on UM's class as well as some other big ten teams everybody. happy signing day

My understanding of what happened was that he was very impressev with the University of California trip and that caused him to reconsider his Michigan deal, plus some issues with his girl friend (always a woman right!), but in the end he "manned up" and honored his original commitment and went with the Maize and Blue. I had even heard local rumor that he was considering staying in Houston area and going to U of H. Not sure of the truth in that one, but I did hear it from a very, very good high school source.
