For the last decade or so, the burnt orange and white have managed to pull boatloads of talent from their home state. This year the trend is the same as 19 of the Longhorns 20 commitments hail from the great state of Texas. The single non-Lone Star state prospect is Nolan Brewster from Denver, Colorado. As usual, not only are the Longhorns keeping in-state talent at home, but they're keeping the cream of the crop in-state talent in Texas. Guys like Aaron Williams, Tre Newton, Dravannti Johnson, and Jarvis Humphrey all have the potential to be stars at the next level. This list still doesn't include Darrell Scott, the #1 ranked running back prospect in the nation, who is currently deciding between Texas and Colorado as his two favorites. If the Longhorns can snatch him off the board, they will be solidified as a top 10 class of 2008. Here are some future Longhorns to watch out for from the 08' Texas class. {mosimage}
Dan Buckner - 4* WR (Allen, TX) - The first thing that you notice when you watch Buckner is his tremendous size and athleticism. He is always climbing the ladder to get to balls and possesses a 32-inch vertical leap. Another strength of this guy is his big hands. Not only are his hands big, but they are soft as well which makes his catches look more simple than they really are. Finally, Buckner is a very disciplined route runner and also has the speed to go deep when necessary. Jeremy Hills - 4* RB (Alief, TX) - This guy played against some of the best competition in the entire state so you know he has all the tools of a great Texas running back. His average size at 5'10" and 180 lbs. is made up for with his amazing burst through the hole and tackle-breaking ability. For a smaller back he can really shed tacklers well. He has great lateral AND vertical speed and once he's through the hole as quick as he is he's going to be able to take it the distance. Only the fastest of the fast will be able to catch up with him. Amazing quickness. Jeremy Hills Video {youtube}OyO-x2K_DnY{/youtube}
David Snow - 4* OL (Gilmer, TX) - Snow is bigger than almost every defensive lineman he faces. His footwork isn't the best and he definitely gets by most times on his pure strength and muscle. He's a very heady player who is constantly aware of his blocking assignments and is always looking for a block down field. Once his footwork improves a little he should be really good. Emmanuel Acho - 3* LB (Dallas, TX) - Has tremendous athleticism and speed for his position (34" vertical, 4.65 forty). Has the motor that teams want in a linebacker and has a lot of room to grow. Is a great tackler with very sound technique. Nolan Brewster - 4* DB (Denver, CO) - Brewster is a huge-hitting safety that reminds me a lot of John Lynch. He's so intelligent in terms of being able to read plays and know exactly what's going to happen. This probably comes from his background as his father is the current head coach at the University of Minnesota. You can really tell he comes from a football family. Just like Lynch, you can tell that Brewster absolutely cherishes every minute of playing at the safety spot. He also possesses good speed and can run wide receivers down from behind.
{mosimage}D.J. Grant - 4* WR (Austin,
TX) - Grant is a fine, athletic specimen who's always a big-play threat.
He has exceptional body control and is really special after the catch.
He also has great footwork in the open field and reminds me of what
might just be the Energizer Bunny on steroids. DeSean Hales - 4* ATH (Klein, TX) - As I described in one of my previous articles, Hales is lightning in a bottle that's just waiting to be opened. He's super fast and hard to find in a crowd which makes him a dangerous threat every time he touches the ball. His 70-yard scamper for a TD highlight on Youtube is something in the realm of Noel Devine legend. Probably my favorite player in this class. Was up for the Best Feet award at the Under Armour All-American game. Will be a game-breaker as a kick returner. Enough said. D.J. Monroe - 4* DB (Angleton, TX) - Not a breathtaking player in terms of highlight reel stuff, but Monroe simply makes plays. Despite his smaller-than-average size, he was one of the toughest corners in the Army All-American Bowl and he just makes plays all over the field. Is also as ripped as any player you'll see. Kheeston Randall - 4* DT (Beaumont, TX) - Real quick for a big man. Will overpower offensive linemen with his pure strength. Lengthy arms should help him shed blocks more easily.
