{mosimage} Well we are about a week away (February 6, 2008) from the National Signing day and all of the "Experts" giving their opinion of how every single school did. One thing about the 2008 Huskers recruiting class is that it will not be as highly ranked as it would have been under Mr. Bill, and I for one say "Thank God". Callahan had one of the top 20 recruiting classes every one of his 4 years, but was only able to garner one top 25 finish out of that.
Another drastic change from Bo's first class as opposed to any of the previous 4 classes out of Mr. Bill is that you will see a significant reduction of Junior College recruits. Over Callahan's 4 classes he had a total of 29 JC transfers, including 11 in his 2005 highly touted class. So far since Bo took over, there are a total of 2 JC players who have committed. One is tight end Tyson Hetzer out of Citrus (Calif.) College who signed in December. They're also expected Wednesday to sign former Omaha Burke lineman Ricky Henry, who now attends the North Dakota State College of Science. There have been a total of 9 players (all high school seniors) who have committed to Nebraska since Pelini became the head coach. According to Jeff Jamrog, the Director of Football Operations and a former walk-on himself under Osborne; The Huskers method is to focus first on recruiting Nebraska high schools, then canvass the area within a 500-mile radius of Lincoln. The next focus is national recruiting. Then and only then will they go to the Junior Colleges and it will only be to only fill a specific need. They Huskers have a good history of using this method in the past, with Mike Rozier in the 80's and Demorrio Williams about 5 years ago both coming from the junior college ranks. Instead of the Junior Colleges, Pelini and company appear to be bringing back the Huskers walk-on tradition. So far, this year's they have 23 walk-on commitments. A walk on, for those of you who may be unaware, is a player who commits to go to school without the benefit of a scholarship and try's out for the football team. Osborne made this practice legendary at Nebraska, sometimes having as many as 100 walk-ons. Callahan had reduced this number to around 10-15 in his 4 years. Pelini has stated that while 100 walk-ons is a little much to handle, he hopes to have around 30-40 at any given time. Bo feels that there is many a kid in the state who has grown up dreaming to play ball at Nebraska and this gives them the chance to fulfill this dream. There have been more than 28 former walk-ons at Nebraska who wound up playing in the NFL. Among those 28 former Nebraska walk-ons who graduated to the NFL, includes such notables as Jimmy Williams, Joel Makovicka, Adam Treu, Jared Tomich and John Parrella, who together played a total of 43 professional seasons.
Some of the more recent recruits who have committed to Nebraska the past couple of weeks include twin brothers Courtney and Steven Osborne from Texas and Antonio Bell from Florida. Courtney Osborne was recruited as a defensive back and Steven as a wide receiver. Antonio Bell a 4.4 40 receiver was a great late addition. With these picks the Huskers currently have 21 verbally committed recruits, 8 of them from the state of Texas. No I am sorry to say that I can't take credit for any of the Texas recruits, most of that credit goes to recently hired running back coach Tim Beck who was hired from Kansas. Beck is a former Texas High School coach and still maintains very strong ties with schools from the Northern and Central part of Texas. See ya Next week GBR!!

Sorry, but you're wrong. "Among those 28 former Nebraska walk-ons who graduated to the NFL, includes such notables as the previously mentioned Rozier and Demorrio Williams, there has been Jimmy Williams, Joel Makovicka, Adam Treu, Jared Tomich and John Parrella, who together played a total of 43 professional seasons" |

I've been known to never let facts get in the way too. Bo would have to work hard for Ohio JEH45. Not only Tressel but Ron Zook and even Charlie Weis I anticipate cleaning up in years to come. But if I recall he's from Mooney, who is always STACKED. That has to help. The last big time Ohio guy I remember going to Lincoln that OSU wanted was a cornerback from the late 90's, I'm thinking. Hopefully someone can step up with a name 'cause it's annoying I can't think of it. He went onto the pro ranks. I'm thinking he came out the same year as Antoine Winfield, who he actually was rated higher than. |
