{mosimage}Recently in the Stuart, Florida News columnist Ray McNulty penned an interesting article regarding Jack Nicklaus (Ray McNulty: A different game). Jack was at Sailfish Point to christen the just-completed renovation of his 1981 signature course at Sailfish Point. Sailfish Point is on the south tip of South Hutchinson Island, bordered on the south by the St. Lucie Inlet to the Atlantic, the west by the Indian River Lagoon, to the east by the Atlantic, and to the north by a gate. Nice place if you can get by the gate.
Jack basically said the game of golf holds little interest to him these days. He relates that the technology in the game has reduced the game to one of power as opposed to finesse. Jack further adds that in the day a golfer had to use every club in the bag and was forced to make shots. Today he dismisses the long drives followed by a wedge shot to the green. Nicklaus excepts Tiger from his broad stroke criticism of the game. Jack compliments Tiger stating he can "really play", and how Tiger finishes "very well". On the concept of finishing Nicklaus made the point that he does not like to watch guys fall on their face the last 5 or 6 holes of a tournament. That failure under pressure is just why I tune in golf on a Sunday if Tiger is leading. I enjoy watching how different golfers perform when the pressure is on and Tiger is there. In the article Jack also compliments Lefty and Ernie Els.
Apparently Jack golfs little these days spending his recreational time playing tennis or fishing. His course design business is booming. His company has 60 courses currently under construction, 195 in the planning stages or under contract. More than 80% are outside the US.
A great quote appeared in the article. "Most people work all their life so they can retire and play golf. I played golf all my life so I could retire and work". Jack goes on to say, Every generation thinks their generation was the best; every generation thinks the kids today can't play. But it's not that they can't play, its just a different game." A game Jack Nicklaus doesn't care to watch.
