{mosimage} I last checked in on this story on January 21, 2008, Bad hire for michigan or as the world turns. Since the 19th there have been developments in this continuing story. The end to this story seems to be no where in sight. Regarding developments the question is where to begin?
You who have read some of my opinion pieces know I figure money just about controls all. Therefore I find it interesting in the linked article that West Virginia finds the month of December to be a profitable month for fund raising, http://www.post-gazette.com/ Right now there is a battle for public opinion. It seems to us that how Rich Rodriguez emerges from this very public battle is important to him on a couple of fronts. First of all, he must be and remain to be accepted by the Michigan faithful. Secondly, recruiting has to be a bitch under normal circumstances, and even worse if your public perception is less than stellar. Linked is a smattering of articles regarding this. http://www.post-gazette.com/http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ The race card has been played. I will reference a Pittsburg Post-Gazette story from Sunday, 01/20/2008. Calvin Magee was the offensive coordinator for West Virginia, now in the same position at Michigan. The bottom line point of the referenced article is that Calvin Magee was not considered for the head coaching position at West Virginia because he is black. http://www.post-gazette.com/ In this day of spin and counter spin one seems to be justified in questioning everything. You do have to initially ask, why wasn't Calvin Magee considered for the position. He had just been named the American Football Coaches Association's assistant of the year. He had been at West Virginia for 7 years. Why not a look see to see if Magee was the man for the job. I tend towards the simple. Simple to me is that Rodriguez told his West Virginia team he was bolting at about 1:00pm on Sunday December 16. His letter of resignation was delivered to the administration at approximately 4:00pm on that same day. By 5:00pm or so that same day Rodriguez flew to Ann Arbor with Calvin Magee. Simple to me is Calvin Magee took himself out of any consideration for the West Virginia job when he jumped ship with Rich Rodriguez. He made a choice. Isn't there a saying "you're either with us or agin us". Seems to me Calvin's actions were "agin" West Virginia, and if he would have been considered, he would not be after getting on that plane. I would also add, from what I can decipher, the race card was initially played by agent Mike Brown who has two clients that I know of-Rodriguez and Magee. Again, as with other aspects of this story-stay tuned. The initial payment from Rich Rodriguez pursuant to the buyout provision of his contract with the University of West Virginia is now past due and unpaid. Rodriguez, through legal counsel has asked the case be removed from the West Virginia state court to federal court. West Virginia has amended their complaint to include a breach of contract allegation. Based upon the rapid developments of this story I would guess "As The World Turns-Part Three" is right around the corner.
