{mosimage} Did any of you watch the NFL Playoffs two weekends ago? From what I saw there were some pretty exciting games going on. Eight teams, right? What's even better for the NFL those four games got people pretty excited about the two games this weekend. Did any of you college fans kind of feel cheated watching those games last weekend? The NFL gets a playoff and an ultimate champion. College football gets voters and debate.
I am not disputing the fact that LSU is the 2008 National Champion. The system has rules. LSU played by those rules and beat OSU. Therefore, they are the National Champion. At the same time, after seeing the various bowl games, were there some potential matchups you would have liked to have seen? Games you would have found intriguing? I am not proposing a particular formula. Not smart enough for that. Further, could I see a system, such as a eight game playoff, that would still be subject to some debate? Of course you could have the 9th place team bitching they didn't get in, but really, who would you rather hear bitch, the 9th place team or the 3rd place team? So why are we in the predicament we are in? I suppose the answer is simply and only money. People are doing real well the way things stand, so why change? To digress from the money deal for the moment, what are the other reasons we dont have a playff? Haven't we heard it would be too many games? I say bullshit to that argument. If the NFL and the lower divisions of the NCAA can play more games then so can the Division 1 boys. I mean really, only the top 2 survivors would play 2 more games than they are already playing. Big F....ing deal. Maybe there would be some problems with semesters vs. quarters and that kindof thing. Certainly there has to be someone smart enough to figure that out. Isn't there an argument the playoff system would diminish the lesser bowls? Anyone planning to lose sleep over that? I don't see it anyhow. The lesser bowls are what they are. They are not BCS games now, They wouldn't be playoff games, therefore I don't see the difference. I am probably not thinking straight, but I can't think of any other reasons so that takes me back to the only reason I believe matters-the present system makes a lot of people and institutions a lot of money. Didn't somebody, somewhere, say a little bit of a revolution every now and again is a good thing? I guess that is what I am proposing. I am a realist. I believe that talk of change is only talk because of the money. I believe any talk you hear of change is like hearing our politicians speak of change-don't hold your breath. Break it down to the bottom line. Our sport would not exist without the fans. That of course is a problem because I for one will continue as a Buckeye fan come hell or high water. That is a done deal. So if we aren't going to quit as fans what can we do? Again, it isn't like I have a bunch of answers. I will throw a few things out and hope that some of you smart people can add your ideas and help mine make more sense. So, what is the revolution I propose: 1. A National Poll With the worldwide web shouldn't it be possible to have a simple yes/no vote poll. Couldn't you see that poll spread from site to site and generate some fairly substantial numbers. With large enough numbers, wouldn't it be relatively simple to then generate some mainstream media interest? 2. Donations to Your Colleges OK, you have done a national poll, generated some pretty impressive numbers, and got some mainstream exposure. Again, remember it is all about the money and the money people do not care what the fans think. Therefore, lets pretend I am a donor to The Ohio State University. Again, via the web, couldn't there be a method wherein I can sign a petition saying I will not donate to OSU until my University President publicly favors a playoff system and the my conference favors a playoff system. I know that sucks a bit, but dammit, if we don't speak the money language nothing will ever happen. 3. State Legislatures Again, staying with the Ohio State thing. OSU is a state supported school in Ohio. OSU needs the funding from the Ohio legislature. So, maybe in one of these poll deals the voters are separated by state and authorize the poll numbers to be presented to the legislature asking the legislature to vote for a nonbinding resolution asking the state schools in the respective states to support a playoff system. The whole point to 2 and 3 is to establish there are additional monetary considerations besides just the bowl revenue. Alumni contributions and tax dollars dwarf bowl revenue. 4. Attack the Bowls/Networks Go to the websites of the various bowl games and you will proudly see a list of the advertisers/sponsors. Again, through the web lets publicize what companies we are speaking about. Start to raise the idea that maybe if Bud is sponsoring the Rose Bowl we will drink Miller. Again, I am in favor of some type of college playoff system. I believe the system we have will be periodically tweeked, but not changed. Money talks, and bullshit walks. Money, as you read this, is against change. The internet gives each of us an easy forum to express our opinion and spread the word. I would love to see it and would support it. I have thrown out some ideas and would be very interested in your ideas and thoughts.
