It's almost 7pm eastern, which means Mark May and Lou Holtz are about to make their picks and May picks LSU, Holtz picks OSU.
I'm nervous as hell for obvious reasons. Holtz picks Buckeyes by 10 or more. As some of you know, I've got the Buckeyes, 34-26. I'm nervous as hell, but noticeably as a fan way more pumped up. Ohio State has lost 8 straight bowl games to SEC teams, while LSU has won 8 straight in the Superdome. Monkey--meet back. I'm drinking Grolsch beer.
It's 7:45
Urban Meyer has said repeatedly OSU's strenght is their front 7 during the pre-game. The amount of fans in the stadium seems pretty much even. It is kind or hard to tell, though and LSU probably has the edge. Desmond Howard picks LSU because they will be healthy. The band plays "Script Ohio" during pre-game. This gets me every time. The LSU band takes the field, so I quickly turn the channel to ESPN. LSU team is "loose" according to ESPN sidelines reporter. Fox is running a skit with Glenn Dorsey where he acts like Forrest Gump. I turn the channel again. Game time just minutes away. The ESPN talking heads on Gameday I think all pick Buckeyes.
The National Anthem is played. When 2 LSU fans see themselves on tv, they point. Urban Meyer says the key is Beanie Wells and trying to force OSU into man coverage. I thought the DB's were pretty damn good. Another commercial break, this game will last forever.
Ohio State ball at the 22.
- First down Buckeyes with some two tailback sets (Brandon Saine). 65 yard touchdwon scamper for Chris "Beanie" Wells. The ground game is key for Ohio State and that is huge. Newsflash: Chris Wells is very good. LSU is used to trailing...looooong way to go.
LSU looks very shaky on first drive, which ends with a 3 and a snapped ball over Matt Flynn's head. Great punt. Buckeye ball on the 40. Last year UF quickly responded to OSU's initial kick off return by Ted Ginn. This year no such luck. Wow an empty back set and pass to Brandon Sain down to the 15 on the first play. Well runs to the 10 until a false start by Rehring pushes them back again. Ohio State stalls and kicks a field goal, 10-0 is the score.
LSU is moving the ball now. First a 20 yard run by hester, tahn a 16 yard pass by Flynn. 3 and 13 for LSU right around the 13. Field Goal...OSU-10 LSU-3
LSU evens the score at 10-10...all while I made myself some more food. 2 personal fouls were killer. One for a late hit was questioned by the announcers. I thought it was a shit call. We've got a ball game folks.
Robiskie has a chance to make the game 17-10 but dropped a td pass. OSU get FG blocked.
LSU is making a point of converting on 3rd downs. This time, they connect for a touchdown pass. LSU gets 17 unanswered. 8 minutes left to go in the first half.
LSU gets a huge INT. Ball inside the 20. They are beginning to dominate.
Ball on the 1 yard line.
HALFTIME REPORT:
LSU is up 24-10. OSU's WR's have looked terrible. Boeckman has looked ok but overall it will be very tough for Ohio State to expect to come back. This could could be closer, with the yardage amounts about the same, but LSU has played the better half. The play where Robiskie drops the TD pass on 3rd and 3 was huge. It lead to a blocked field goal. Even though execution was the issue, I hated that call. Run Beanie twice. As it stands, LSU has 24 on the board and the OSU O and D will have to turn things around big time for the unexpected to happen. As much experience as this OSU team has in the big game, they sure are looking bad at times. More turnovers and more penalties usually spell DOOM.
Wow, Ohio State has them stopped and then gets a roughing the kicker penalty against them. Then another personal foul. LSU says "thank you" and goes up 21. The sweater vest is confused.
Ohio State punts to the 11. I want to punch myself repeatedly.
Malcom Jenkins picks off a pass, Ohio State scores a td on a 4th down catch by Robiskie. 1:30 in the 3rd, things still are not looking too good but there is a chance.
31-17 is the score. I've got a ripping headache.
Huge fourth down and 7 for Ohio State at the 38. Boeckman dances to much. When he slid, he half assed it. If he dove he could have had a first down. Note to self, don't slide in championship games.
Wow, Boeckman holds on to it too long and it is stripped. At the least, Boeckman could have thrown a quick slant and had a chance.
Ohio State with ball again. The D is actually playing ok.
Boeckman with another INT. Bad pass. OSU is done, officially. Bed is starting to sound nice. Starting to feel glad I stayed home and did not go to New Orleans.
Conclusion: I have a headache. There is a bunch of work I've been avoiding that will be much easier to do starting tomorrow. Basketball season is always very much welcome after a football title game loss. This performance ranks right up there with last year's. Sure the yardage for the O was better, but everything about the OSU team was anti-clutch. My original prediction of 34-26 was simply not meant to be...at all. Humble pie always leaves a bitter after taste. I'll be sure not to clean my pallet again.

Tresselball simply wasn't going to get it done against such a great LSU team this year. OSU needs a deep threat on the outside and better QB play. They got as much as they could out of this team this year so you can't fault Jimbo. Ah well no we have to listen to sec slappies the entire offseason |
