Happy New year to each of you. I have been flying under the radar so to speak for the better part of the past two weeks, one because I was on vacation from my "real job", and secondly because my brain had just plain run out of things to write about. So about all I was really good for was an occasional comment on a few of my friends articles that piqued my interest. Also of course the BAD season that the Husker football team endured, along with the fact that their basketball team has never been one to "write home about". In fact their basketball team being good happens about as often as Kansas' football team being good. Sorry, just couldn't resist that comparison. Anyway that is the way things go sometimes, so let's see if I can bring anyone off the bench with this article.
In the AFC, I see Jacksonville beating up on the Steelers once again in Pittsburgh; I just don't think that the Steelers defense is up to the task of stopping the Jag's running attack. I also see the Chargers, more so Norv Turner, finally winning a playoff game over the Titans (now that's going out on a limb huh). In the second round New England takes care of Jacksonville and the Colts defeat the Chargers to set up the 1 seed versus 2 seed. New England goes to Arizona with an 18-0 record and several 1972 Dolphins are rushed to their area hospitals with chest pains as their "reason for living" is circling the drain. In the NFC, look for Joe Gibb's Redskins to continue the "un-political" thing and beat up on Seattle in the opening round. The second NFC first round game is about as appealing as getting a "Colonoscopy" with the New York Giants facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. Well at least the weather should be nice, Giants win this one. In the second round, look for things to go back to the "predictable" although the Redskins could take out the Cowboys if T.O. isn't playing, Green Bay should be able to take care of business at home against the Giants. In the NFC championship Dallas takes out the Packers for the title in a rematch of their 1968 title game. So that leaves me to pick the Super Bowl match-up of Dallas versus New England. What can I say, 19-0 4th title for Brady and Belichick, history calls for both of them. I am impressed with the season that Brady had, but not so much for Moss and his 23 touchdown catches. Especially considering that Rice had his 22 in only 12 games during the strike season, with 4 more games the record would probably be around 26 I think. I was impressed with his behavior, for which credit has to go to Brady and the other players I believe who kept Moss in check. I may try to crank out an NBA article later this week, but I am thoroughly pissed off at the Houston Rockets and their hovering around the .500 mark. T-Mac has definitely wore out his welcome here in Houston and I find it funny that he is now back with the main person he was traded for 4 years ago in Steve Francis. Tracy McGrady has missed the past few games with "a knee bone bruise" that he says may take a couple more weeks to heal. T-Mac went through this same sort of crap in Orlando, before the Rockets bailed him out with the Francis trade, what at first looked like a very promising season back in October, has now turned out a mess in December, we had a new coach, new GM and new players and things apparently on the upswing, but that was on paper, no on the court. At least the Rockets didn't go "retro" with their shorts like the Lakers did last week. Finally I watched in amazement yesterday afternoon (New Year's Day) as the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins played the first US NHL outdoor game in Buffalo in a driving sleet/snow storm. From what I could tell the players looked like 10-12 year olds with the enthusiasm they showed from start to finish. I also, for whatever reason found the game much easier to watch and follow as compared to an indoor game. Kudos to the NHL for coming up with this idea.

Let me congratulate you on the Texans season and the emergence of Mario Williams. The dude blew up and I thought the Texans front office was crazy for picking him over Vince Young and Reggie Bush. I still think it would have been a good thing to draft VY, but Williams looks to be one of the better DE's in the league. I would like to see the Indianapolis Colts beat the New England Patriots. I'm sick of Michigan Man Tom Brady smiling all of the time. McGrady plays too damn soft. He and the people around him would be better if he focused more on his mid-range game and driving to the hoop. People in Orlando were upset with T-Mac but really, they have to be happy with the way things turned out. It's hard for me to see McGrady ever winning a championship as the go-to guy. He is too inconsistent and his teammates usually just watch him do his thing. Of course, he needs to focus on winning a 1st round of the playoffs first. |
