Well 2007 is just about over, and in the world of sports that could only mean one thing besides the obligatory end of the year College Bowl games. It means it's time for everyone's annual sport's superlatives list to come out. With that in mind, let's take a look at the top teams of 2007 by sport. (*Disclaimer: No additonal Sports Writers were contact or polled for this list, and I can not confirm nor deny that Hawaii's football team sent me a fruit basket as a thank you for their inclusion in the list).
Pro Football (NFL) 2007: Best Team: New England PatriotsThe year started out with Peyton Manning, Dungy and the Colts finally getting the Super Bowl ring they have been after all decade, and the Colts still have a solid team this season. Still, one can't ignore a few other teams who have put in a good, if not great season. Among them are the Brett Favre led Packers, and Tony Romo's Cowboys. Both teams are well on the way to the playoffs and both have a historic legacy to live up to. Yet this year's best team has to be the undefeated New England Patriots. Though they have been accused of running up the score, and they have been caught cheating (filming the other team's signals), this Tom Brady led team is hot on the heels of the legendary 1972 Miami Dolphins. If for some reason they fail to win the Super Bowl, they can always show up on another list as the biggest flop of 2008. Pro Football (AFL) 2007: Best Team: San Jose Sabercats No surprise here. The Sabercats, who finished the season 13-3 and scored over 1,000 points, easily won the Arena Super Bowl. In the process QB Mark Grieb threw for 100 touchdowns in the regular season. College Football (NCAA) 2007: Best Team: Hawaii Warriors In this year of upsets, one team stands alone. Sure they have not gotten the recognition they richly deserve, but there is no denying Hawaii's undefeated season. This pass-happy Colt Brennan led team has done what no other team has done this year, they have avoided the big upset. So while Ohio State might rank first in the polls, and LSU second, Hawaii should rank first in your hearts. Besides, it would be fitting in this year of upsets where Michigan is not ranked in the top 20, and Notre Dame almost finished the season with double-digit losses. Honorable mention should go to upstart Missouri and Kansas, who made a run for the BCS this year only to fall a bit short. Pro Basketball Men (NBA) 2007: Best Team: Boston Celtics In 2006-07 it looked like the Dallas Mavericks were the team to beat, at least in the regular season. Dallas who reeled off 67 regular season wins faltered in the playoffs and the Spurs took home another Championship. But this year it looks like the Celtics are back in dynasty form. Pulling of a trade that brought the team future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen, the Celtics have won 20 out of their first 22 games. So out with the old (the Spurs) and in with the new, this year's best team is the Boston Celtics. Pro Basketball Women (WNBA) 2007: Best Team: Phoenix Mercury The Mercury took home the title after a regular season in which they average over 89 points a game. Phoenix is loaded with talent and features a line-up that includes Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor and Cappie Pondexter. Pondexter came up huge in the finals taking home the MVP award. College Basketball (NCAA) Men 2007: Best Team: Florida Gators Behind All-American Tyler Hansbrough, the North Carolina Tar Heels are back where they always seem to be, on top of the NCAA standings. The Heels are so far 9-0 to open up the 2007-08 season. Hansbrough has been the steady force behind this team averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds a game. The only other team that the polls are respecting is the Memphis Tigers. Still, the Florida Gators had a 2006-07 season for the ages, taking home the title against Ohio State, to become back-to-back champions. College Basketball (NCAA) Women 2007: Best Team: Tennessee Lady Volunteers Plenty of teams remain undefeated in the Ladies game, but Tennessee at 9-0 is once again on top of the polls by a wide margin. Perhaps this team should move over to the men's game for better competition. Leading the team is Candace Parker who gets the Lady Vols 21 points and 9 rebounds a game. Major League Baseball (MLB) 2007: Best Team: Boston Red Sox* Yes, the Red Sox won the series. Yes, they did it convincing fashion over the upstart Colorado Rockies. The Rockies where hot during the playoffs but lost all their steam against the Red Sox. Still, in this era of rapid steroid usage and the Mitchell report, lets give them an asterisk by their name. Do they deserve it? Who know, but in baseball is accuse first, provide proof later. Hockey (NHL) 2007: Best Team: Detroit Red Wings No surprise here, Detroit has another winner in the Wings, who currently lead the standing with 51 points. Still, attendance is down in Hockey Town. Part of the reason is this team lacks color. Even without color, the dynamic Euro duo of Zetterberg (24 goals in 33 games) and Datsyuk (28 assists in 33 games) is enough to have them buzzing about another Stanley Cup. Soccer (MLS) 2007: Best Team: Houston Dynamo In case you missed it, the Dynamos beat perennial runner-up New England in the MLS championship game this year. The game was carried on ABC TV, but the whole MLS- David Beckham experience fizzled. As Beckham, who was build-up as a scorer (which he isn't) failed to deliver much more than a few headlines. So there it is. If you disagree, I suggest you compile your own list and go write your own article.
