Are the 2007 Miami Dolphins as bad as the 1976 Buccaneers...or are they just unlucky? Print E-mail

{mosimage}Just how bad are the 2007 Miami Dolphins? Are they bad enough to be worse than the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the legendary NFL team with the perfect 0-16 season? after all the Dolphins are on their way to matching them game for game, as they rolled their record to 0-13 today. Three more loses and this team will accomplish the reversed of what the fabled 1972 team did. Three more loses and they too will have a perfect season of sort.

Still, this team has a ways to go to match the Buccaneers, as the team has been more a victim of bad breaks than shear lack of talent. For all their woes, the Dolphins can still compile a highlight reel to their season, something that Tampa Bay would have been hard pressed to do in 1976, unless you count the entertaining quotes issued by head coach John McKay during that season of total futility. Before losing a good part of their offensive starters to injuries, the 2007 Dolphins could at least put up points, something that the inept Buccaneers never found a way to do. In that infamous season, the Bucs were shutout a total of five times and posted all of 125 points for the season. On the other hand, the Dolphins started the season led by the fantastic running and receiving of Ronnie Brown. Before going down with an injury, Brown had gained 991 yards from scrimmage in just seven games. His replacement Jesse Chatman also had a respectable start in Brown's absence, gaining over 340 yards rushing in four starts before he too went down with an injury. Still luckless, the Dolphin's lost Ricky Williams for the season in his first game back, after he too fell victim to an injury.

Not to let the backfield have all the glory, starting quarterback Trent Green took one too many hits to the head and was lost for the season after only five starts. That left the passing game in the hands of journey man Cleo Lemon and rookie John Beck, both of whom have been a poor substitute for Green. Yet, with four players lost from their backfield, Miami has still found ways to put up points, their only shutout coming on horrid field conditions during their 0-3 loss to the Steelers.

Yet Miami's tragedy has not been limited to the offense, the defense too has had its share of losses, the latest of which took down All-Pro linebacker Zach Thomas. Thomas the heart of the Dolphins defense for the last decade, suffered a concussion in September and later was involved in car crash in October and has had recurring migraines ever since. In the midst of a horrendous season, the Dolphin's thought it best to shut down Zach for the season, and placed him on the injured reserve list.

While it has not lead to a victory, the Dolphins have also been solid on special teams. Kicker Jay Feely has hit 17 out of 19 field goals he has attempted, and Ted Ginn Jr.has done his best Joey Galloway impersonation in the return game, averaging 24 yards a kick return and 12.5 yards a punt returns. These added dimensions were never a solid part of the woeful Buccaneer team of 1976.

So despite their winless record, clearly, the 2007 Miami Dolphins are not even in the same ballpark as the 1976 Buccaneers when the roll call of bad NFL teams is taken. What we have hear is a plain case of karma. Luck once smiled on this franchise in the form of a perfect season, something that Don Shula and his boys bring to our attention every season. Bad luck then has decided to even the score in Miami, and taken back the gift once given. So color this team the unluckiest in the history of the NFL and let it go at that.

The Bucs were only 0-14, so the Dolphins have to go down as worse. If the Dolphins go completely defeated and the Patriots go undefeated, I think that the Dolphins season should be of higher legendary status. Every team experiences injuries, but the Dolphins are doing something special. They don't have a viable NFL quarterback, they reached on a one-dimensional receiver/return man in the draft rather than selecting their future QB, and they have ignored an aging front 7, paying overrated Joey Porter an incredible amount of money to make their team worse. To lay down for 16 straight games takes a level of committment that many of us will never know. It's much harder to go completely defeated, accepting millions of dollars for your non-effort and ignoring the fan base that is pleading for just one lousy victory, than it is to go undefeated.

A bit harsh my man...the Dolphins have played a few competitve close games, unlike the Bucs...as for the 0-14 verese 0-16...if the season had gone another 12 games for the Bucs they would have lost them too...remember that is basically the same team that lost 26 in a row.

However, I will give you that Ginn Jr. was a reach at best in round one... smilies/smiley.gif

Oh my god....I can't believe Dolphin's fans are still dissing on Ted Ginn. Are you kidding me!?

He had the biggest gain of the game for the Dolphins yesterday on a deep pass and if he had a decent QB/O-Line to work with he'd be doing much more. He is by far the best player on that horrible Miami offense...as a rookie. I've listened to a couple games on the radio, and local announcers never stop talking about how they need to get the ball in his hands because he is THE MAN.

He was selected because he was by far the best athlete on the board. As the former #1 recruit in the nation, he is a proven gamebreaker. I hope the Dolphins trade him so their fans can see how f'ing dumb they've been about Ted Ginn.

It won't happen though, of course, because Dolphins management see him every day and know he is all class and someone you can build around. Of course, Miami and "class" rarely coincide.

By the way, what QB should they have taken? The #22 pick Brady Quinn, who has been holding a clip board all season? Yeah, I'm sure he'd do wonders for Miami. There is a reason they traded Chris Chamber people. Ginn is the future!

They've been crippled with injuries and bad luck. They went with Beck too early, basically giving up on the season.

Any Ginn complainers, after he has proven to be their best offensive player (yes, I watch many Dolphins games), are morons or simply are not watching the games.

He's becoming a very solid receiving threat along with his special teams play. He's returned 3-4 kicks for tds with all but one called back due to penalty. If they had a decent (coverage) team, he'd have a few more.

Again, for anyone to complain about the Dolphins best player, who is a rookie, when they have so many bad things going on....is a freaking idiot or simply has not watched the Dolphins play.

Well if I count for anything, IMHO, The 76/77 Buc's were by far the most inept NFL Team I have had the misfortune of watching. Just for "onearm's" information, those Buc's went through the 76 season with 14 straight losses, included in those losses were to Buffalo (2 -12), the Jets (3-11) and fellow "newbie" Seattle (2-12).

Those Buc's then proceded to lose another 12 straight the following season for a Grand total of 26 straight before they won the final 2 games of the 77 season. They were even more inept in 77 scoring a total of 103 points, including suffering 6 shut-outs. smilies/cry.gif Also, and here's a "strange one" they played the 76 season in the AFC, then the 77 in the NFC, switching with fellow "newbie" Seattle.

In regards to this past seasons draft, I think the Dolphins would have been better off drafting defense, maybe linebackers....

I get to see bits and pieces of the Dolphin games down here in South Florida and don't know how they should have drafted because there are so many holes-injuries and the like- that they need help everywhere on the field. Re Ginn-he obviously has needed time to acclimate to the offensive game, but i would suspect management is happy with his progress and will not look for receiver help in this years draft.

maybe, just maybe we like honking your horn Lloyds... smilies/smiley.gif...though I believe i actually said some positive thinks about your Buckeye boy wonder...

I mean come on, he is not even up to Joey Galloway status yet...his stable mate Gonzalez has been doing better in Indy...of course, they have QB that is a wee bit better there...

Having said that, I too watch those Bucs played in 76-77...and its no contest...they sucked far worse...

Obviously I didn't see this legendary Bucs team as I wasn't born until a decade later, but this Dolphins team is a disgrace. They are especially awful in my mind because no professional league in American sports has had more parity than the NFL in this decade. Almost every team is the exact same, and the fact that the Dolphins have a good shot at losing EVERY game to a league full of "they're OK's" and "ya, I guess they're good's" is almost beyond comprehension. The NFL, for the most part, is a poor product. Every team is the same, which is great for cities like Cleveland (where I'm from) because a team can go from bad to "great" in one season. In terms of the quality and entertainment value of the games, parity is a huge detriment. This same Dolphins team could go .500 or better next year and few would be surprised, just because 3/4 of the teams in the league are exactly the same.

Onearmed,
You are so correct on that one. Pete Rozelle is smiling at this one no doubt, as his vision of all teams in the playoff hunt until the final couple of weeks is here and has been for a couple of seasons. we are experiencing a "hiccup" so to speak with the Dolphins and Patriots this year. If you were around in the 80's you had extremely dominate teams such as the Bears, 49ers, and Giants and weak sisters such as the Oilers, Falcons and Lions who never seemed to be able to win.

Think dolphins are going to win a game??? Track your picks at http://www.picktastic.com. I personally don't believe the dolphins have it in them to win a game.. they've just gone from bad to worse this season.. doesn't help with the loss of their star running back smilies/sad.gif
