{mosimage}Well this has been so much fun for me, but as is the case with all "good things", they must end. As was the case for almost every week, there was a shake-up regarding the bottom 10, so read away to see where your favorite team wound up in my FINAL BOTTOM 10 POLL.
Number 10 (tie) - Baylor "Cupboard is Bare" (3-9 with a 9 game streak) and Notre Dame Crying Irish (3-9). A strong 21-7 victory over the 3-8 Stanford Cardinals almost pushed the Irish out of the bottom 10, but based on strength of wins (Duke 1-11 and UCLA 6-5) I had to include them. Baylor gets in on the strength of a 9 game streak and wins over D-2 Texas State and Rice (3-9) and Buffalo (5-7) very impressive. Both teams season is complete.
Number 9 - UAB "Suits" - These bozo's check in at a strong 2-10 and it is amazing that they have flown "under my radar" the entire season. Have a current 6 game streak and allowed an impressive 35 points per game. Season is complete.
Number 8 - Northern Illinois "Muskies" - Another team that made a previous appearance in my bottom 5 only to mess it up and pull a victory from the Jaws of Defeat. Finished a strong 2-10 for the season with a defense that gave up 31 points per game.
Number 7 - UNLV "runnin rabies" Here is another team that I didn't notice the pathetic nature of until just this past week. They finished the season at 2-10 with an 8 game streak. They had the best defense of the bottom 10 teams allowing only 29 points per contest.
Number 6 - Duke "Bedevils" - Finished their season with a 1-11 record by losing to Georgia Tech 41-24. Both schools were so upset with this game that they fired their head coaches. Duke gave up an average of 33 points per game and if not for that damn Northwestern game could have been 0-12, season is complete.
Number 5 - Minnesota "rodents" - Gave up an average of 37 points per game season is now complete
Number 4 - North Texas Gang Green - They entered their final contest Saturday against Florida International looking to move out of the bottom 10 as they came into this contest ranked 9th. What a failure that attempt was, as first year coach Todd Dodge, who closed out his high school career with a 48 game winning streak, 3 straight Texas High school class 5-A (highest) championships. He ends his first season as a college coach watching his team get crushed by Florida International 38 - 19. Finished 2-10 and allowed an impressive 45 points per game.
Number 3 - Florida International "yellow cats" - After carrying an impressive losing streak of 23 straight games over 2 seasons the Cats just could not sustain their excellence against conference foe North Texas. Even though they finished the season allowing more than 447 yards per game and 39 points, while scoring only 15 per game, they took down the mighty "Green" by the score of 38-19 to move out of the cellar, both in their conference and in my final bottom 10.
Number 2 - SMU "donkeys" - Finish up their season in fine fashion against Memphis with a tight 3-point loss 55-52. For the season this team gave up 40 points per game, something only 3 other schools were also able to accomplish, and no, one of those teams was not Nebraska.
Number 1 - Idaho "scandals" - Our final regular season Number 1 team inherited this position on the strength of losing to equally impressive conference foe fellow loser Utah State who entered the game also at 1-10. Idaho proved they deserved this ranking by losing to Utah State by the score of 24-19. For the season they gave an average of 419 yards per game, scored an impressive 21 points per game while allowing 36.9 per game.
Well there you have my final bottom 10 of the 2007 NCAA-D-1 season. I had a lot of fun looking up these losers each week. With some luck I just might crank this one up again next season. I might even do a similar bottom 10 if anyone is interested for NCAA basketball.
