10 Most Overrated Teams of 2007 Print E-mail

{mosimage}This has been the craziest college football season on record. Up is down, down is up, and Kansas is in the top 5 in the BCS. With the parity that now exists in college football, it's very difficult to decipher which teams are for real. As soon as a team gains some respect, they shit the bed almost immediately.

There have been a number of top five teams that have fallen precipitously as the season has gone on. The number of teams that were once considered title contenders and are now barely in the Top 25 or out of the polls altogether is shocking. This leads to a very important question. Which team was the most overrated this season? Out of all the average to bad teams to grace the Top 25, who sucks the most? Here are the Top 10 most overrated teams in the 2007 season.

10. Kansas (11-1)
Highest rank: #2
Current rank: #7
Synopsis: I realize that Kansas nearly went undefeated in the Big 12. But the truth about this team is that they played NOBODY for the first 11 weeks of the season. When they finally played a real team, they got spanked for three quarters, put up a valiant comeback, but succumbed to a real football team. Kansas at #2 is a joke. They are the exact same team as Hawaii: a high flying offense that played nobody until last week. So why was Kansas #2 and Hawaii still doesn't have a BCS berth clinched despite passing their only test (Boise State) with flying colors? Because Kansas plays in the Big 12. If Kansas was #2, then Hawaii should have been #3. Now the clock has struck midnight, Kansas isn't even in the Big 12 title game, and they are going to get spanked in whatever BCS game they draw. Nice season, sure. BCS worthy? I don't think so. And could whoever televises their BCS game please spare me the 350 cutaways of Mark Mangino? I've eaten nothing but salads since the Missouri game because the image of him as the blueberry from Willy Wonka is burned into my retinas. Thanks ABC.

9. Texas (9-3)
Highest rank: #4
Current rank: #17
Synopsis: Texas is one of three teams on this list to still be in the Top 25. The reason they are included is because this was the year they were supposed to make the leap. Colt McCoy was supposed to build on a legendary freshman season and lead this team to a Big 12 title and more. A BCS game was almost a given for this team preseason. After two disappointing losses in the middle of the season, Texas had a chance to sneak into the Big 12 title game ahead of Oklahoma. They showed just how clutch they are with a loss to Texas A + M, effectively ending their BCS hopes.

8. Florida State (7-5)
Highest rank: #21
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: FSU continues to get respect due to their success in the 1990s and the first few years of this millennium. They still bring in excellent recruits, but they never seem to live up to the hype. That points to ineffective coaching. So does five losses for a team with the talent to take down the ACC. They showed what they can do in defeating then #2 Boston College, but they also showed just how average they can be in a loss to Wake Forest.

7. South Florida (9-3)
Highest rank: #2
Current rank: #25
Synopsis: Who saw this coming? South Florida, ranked #2, losing three straight games to fall from the Top 25? Oh ya, everybody. If any team was going to fall prey to the wackiness of this season, it was going to be this overhyped, overrated Cinderella. Matt Grothe is decent, and they've got some playmakers on defense, but South Florida is not quite there yet. This is a team on the rise, and their week at #2 was good experience for a program that will continue to improve. The next time they crack the Top 5, I expect them to be legit contenders.

6. Kentucky (7-5)
Highest rank: #8
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: This is a schizo team if I've ever seen one. They took out LSU in triple OT, but they also lost to fellow overrated SEC foe South Carolina and the great Mississippi State. Five losses for a team that had a Heisman contender (Andre Woodson) and beat the top team in the land? Inexcusable. There is no reason this team should have dropped five games. With Woodson on the way out, don't expect them to return to the Top 10 anytime soon.

5. South Carolina (6-6)
Highest rank: #6
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: Another SEC team with no identity, South Carolina started the year 6-1 before dropping their last five games. Now they are destined for the WhoGivesaShit.com bowl, because what bowl is going to get excited about having a team that hasn't won a game in over a month? Spurrier's offensive genius wasn't enough to keep this team afloat, and their collapse down the stretch speaks to a lack of motivation and accountability from the Old Ball Coach.

4. California (6-5)
Highest rank: #2
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: Cal was the de facto #1 for about an hour, but Oregon State took them down and the slide began. Cal had me fooled in a big way. I didn't figure they'd go undefeated, but to lose five of their last six? That has to be a joke. There is way too much talent on this team to barely be above .500. DeSean Jackson performed only a fraction of the magic he was supposed to. Still, this team was loaded with explosive talents. To be ranked #2 midseason and then finish the campaign with a barely bowl eligible record is unfathomable, and I'll be shocked if I find a Cal fan who would admit their loyalty to the Golden Bears at this point.

3. Nebraska (5-7)
Highest rank: #14
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: Holy crap. What the hell happened to Nebraska? They were thought to be the kind of team that could upset USC. They actually gave the Trojans a decent test for a while, but it was all downhill after that. Just when it looked like Bill Callahan and his West Coast offense were finally getting something done, the Huskers went on an epic losing streak, resulting in Callahan's firing. Not to mention that the Huskers aren't even bowl eligible. And to think that this team was winning national titles not too long ago. Tom Osborne cannot be happy.

2. Michigan (8-4)
Highest rank: #5
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: Appalachian State. That's really all that needs to be said. But since I am an avid Michigan hater, I must delve deeper into the Wolverines' suckitude. Chad Henne, Mike Hart, Jake Long. These three top flight talents passed up gigantic money in the NFL to come back and beat Ohio State and take a shot at the National Championship. Four embarrassing losses later, including three at home, and the big three are 0-7 in the games that mattered in their careers. They'll look to go completely defeated in whatever bowl they end up in, capping off truly forgettable careers. Lloyd Carr even jumped ship, to the chagrin of Buckeye fans everywhere. This team was a failure and an embarrassment. Wolverine fans better hope that Ryan Mallett learns how to throw any pass under 15 yards with a little touch, or they'll be just as bad next year.

1. Louisville (5-6)
Highest rank: #8
Current rank: unranked
Synopsis: As much as Michigan sucks, Louisville was even more of an embarrassment. Who knew that losing Bobby Petrino would cripple this team? They returned one of the top quarterbacks in college football in Brian Brohm, and with targets like Douglas and Urrutia to go to, a trip to New York for the Heisman presentation appeared to be in Brohm's future. Six losses later and Brohm's college career is in jeopardy of ending without a final bowl trip. Unless the Cardinals beat Rutgers this weekend, they will not be bowl eligible. The way this season has gone for Lousiville, don't be surprised if they get spanked at home. Don't worry Brian, there's always the NFL. And you have won one title: Most Overrated Team of 2007.

Onearmed: I think you have hit the nail on the head. I am semi caught up in the controversy surrounding who should go to BCS Championship. The talking head crap is almost more than I can stand. I watched the kansas/Missouri game last Saturday and was shocked at how poorly kansas played on D. I found myself rooting for someone on Kansas to just hit someone, anyone. Yet, prior to the game the talking heads were telling us how great Kansas was. Just hit the rewind button. We heard the same thing about how many teams throughout the year. Rutgers one week. South Florida the next. Cal, Louisville-the list goes on and on. Bottom line points to this comment are: 1. All this talk is nothing but talk. Teams have to play each other-there needs to be a playoff. Settle the talk on the field. 2. There is less accountability among supposed experts than there is for weathermen. If you listenned to the Lou Holtzs and the mark Mays and bet their picks you would be broke. If I had their job, and spent a week hyping the flavor of the week like they do-remember south Florida-I would be ashamed of myself. Add on the fact that they have agendas it is about enough to make you puke. Maybe that is why I like DeathRattle-writers write their thoughts and we admit our agendas. I for exmple am a Buckeye. It is pretty simple. Don't want to read an article with a Buckeye slant-don't read my article.
