{mosimage} Find out which school the under-the-radar QB/WR/DB prospect from Westland, Michigan picked and read my scouting report.
For the past two years, I have covered high school football games and prospects for the Web site www.michiganelitefootball.com, which will soon be a part of the popular rivals.com site. And in those two years, I've yet to see a prospect in person as athletic as Westland (MI) John Glenn High's Keshawn Martin. Martin committed to Michigan State last week, choosing the Spartans over Illinois (Michigan also brought him in to watch the Ohio State game but Martin said they didn't offer him). Martin flew under the radar for almost all of the 2007 season because he didn't put up great stats while learning to play QB for the first half of the year. On top of that, he didn't have enough money to go to any camps so no one knew about him. But it was clear from the first game I saw him that he had exceptional athletic ability. Once Martin began to learn how to play, he took off and big-time stats would soon follow. Mostly a running QB, he rushed for 876 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year and that's not counting at least three long ones I personally saw called back. He also has an exceptionally strong arm although his decision-making was questionable at times. I saw him play four games and after each one I asked him if any colleges were taking notice, to which he would always reply "no." But around the time Glenn's season was concluding, the three aforementioned Big Ten programs began knocking on his door. Martin ran a hand-timed 4.38 and has an array of moves that he uses to make defenders look like they're standing still. On one play against Livonia Franklin, a top-25 level team in the state, Martin ran right and then juked backward before cutting back up the middle, splitting throug 2 defenders, and then darting up the gut for a 90-yard touchdown run. Here are a few videos I shot of him. Unfortunately my Dell laptop crashed a couple weeks back and I lost 10 other ones I had or so. VIDEO 1 {youtube}PpxQ4U7V9Uc{/youtube}
VIDEO 2 {youtube}Ki9kggVRtHw{/youtube} He will play WR at Michigan State and probably return kicks as well, and I expect him to eventually be a playmaker at the next level assuming he qualifies. He is the epitome of a sleeper recruit and an example of how the state of Michigan needs better high school football scouting, coaching, and coverage if it is to fulfill its potential and come close to level of Ohio, Florida, or Pennsylvania for example as a top talent-producing state. I personally believe the state is capable of being a football power with increased financial and media support. Keep an eye on Martin as moves on to MSU next year and remember you heard about him here first.

Cool man, good to know. I saw you were merging with Michigan Preps, which made me wonder what would happen with the current site. When Bucknuts.com split from Scout.com they advertised themselves as THE Independent source for Buckeye news. A month later they joined forces with ESPN, but their "Independent" slogan is still up, I guess, because they still have their own site. Their partnership gives them access to a giant database of info and at the same time they can promote themselves easier. So it's just interesting to me how these things go down and how people apparently make cash. Also interesting, the AC guys (or atleast one of the main dudes) are descendants of Yahoo, who of course owns Rivals. It's crazy how quickly internet media has become like ABC or NBC, Coca-Cola or Pepsi, Democrats or Republicans. It all tastes the same and is extremely difficult to differentiate yourself and "make it." Not that that is wrong necessarily, it just is what it is. AC is a cool thing for writers but they really pissed me off for not letting me post something about our podcast contest, which is also cool thing for sports fans. Pretty retarded if you ask me, especially considering Nikki is the one who tried to do it and she has posted a million articles in the past to their lame asses. Not to get off subject, but I for some reason was listening to the Democratic debates and John Edwards criticized Hillary Clinton (Bush Light) for taking so much corporate soft money for her campaign, which no doubt plays a huge role in determining opinions and laws. The crowd booed him for bringing it up, which really took me by surprise. I guess that's just the way it is these days. I dunno, the internet is supposed to offer alternatives, which it does until the alternatives get big enough to be bought. Even EDSBS, the popular SEC sports blog, is affiliated with CBS Sportsline. I noticed this the other day because they have a blog/column thing going on the site. I just want to take down Bristol with great vengeance and furious anger. No big, biggie. Who is with me? |

Well we've been shopping around...taking our time to say the least. Bottom line is right now we don't have the time or resources to buy and print the t-shirts ourselves like we wanted right now, so we are going through an account we opened at Cafe Press. They are quality. Right now we only have one design up and going so we'll get the link up to buy those today. I'll also have some verbage up for people who have contributed and what not (free or discount). Thanks for pushing us. hehe |
