Breaking News on Sam McGuffie and Daryl Stonum's Futures with Michigan Print E-mail

After rampant speculation about his future, a positive piece of information has finally come out about Texas superstar running back Sam McGuffie and his future with the Michigan football team.

McGuffie committed to Michigan based partly on his strong relationship with running backs coach Fred Jackson, a long-time Lloyd Carr friend and assistant coach. But even though Jackson will most likely leave Ann Arbor, a report from the Detroit Free Press says that both Stonum, a 4-star WR, and McGuffie, a 4-star RB, will both honor their committments to Michigan. The news came straight from Stonum's mouth through GoBlueWolverine.com.

The news is huge for anxious UM fans who were worried mostly about losing McGuffie, who is good enough to compete for a starting job next year in a backfield that loses Mike Hart but returns some solid backs like Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown as well as Kevin Grady from injury.

Stonum's committment became a bit of a distant memory after McGuffie committed weeks later but he is a big-play receiver in the mold of Mario Manningham with 4.3-4.4 speed and an important player for the Wolverines as well. Michigan has a deep receiving corps coming back with young stars like Toney Clemons and Junior Hemingway coming up but Stonum is the fastest of their potential WR's next year and Manningham is a solid bet to go pro this off-season.

George Morales, the first long-snapper UM's used a scholarship on in 13 years, also will honor his committment.

Of Michigan's 17 verbal committments, the ones most likely to waver and pick another school are Connecticut RB Mike Cox, New Jersey linebacker J.B. Fitzgerald, and Illinois QB John Weinke.

5-star CB Boubacar Cissoko is also a possibility and will be looking around at other schools although he said Michigan is still his favorite.
