{mosimage}With
the departure of Lloyd Carr as head coach at the University of
Michigan, most of the focus over the past few weeks has been about who
will be next at the helm for the Wolverines. During Carr's press conference Monday morning, he spoke about the timing of his decision and announcement in the grand scheme of things inside Schembechler Hall. Though finding the right man for the job is the obvious next step, the most serious of upcoming actions for the program will be to hold onto the commitments of the 2008 recruiting class. With Carr's impending retirement over the last couple of weeks, Detroit Cass Tech commit Boubacar Cissoko has been rumored to be looking around again. The Maize and Blue must do everything in its power to keep him and others signed on to play at Michigan. {mosimage} Other key recruits include running back Sam McGuffie of Cy-Fair (TX) and wide receiver Darryl Stonum, also from Texas. If any of those three players decide to defect and choose another school, the Wolverines could be in a world of hurt three to four years down the road. Carr even mentioned it, saying he stepped down in time for athletic director Bill Martin to hire a new coach that could make home and school visits for current and upcoming recruits. Carr said it was his goal to make sure the program was in good standing when he departed - and even in stepping down, he was thinking about the program's future. "My timing is based on one thing: What's best for Michigan football," Carr said. "To do it any later, to do it after a bowl game, would have been absolutely ridiculous." That statement in itself shows the pride and dedication he has had to the program over the last 28 years. Whether or not fans lauded or hated Carr's coaching and/or style, one thing rings true for everyone - Lloyd Carr was one of the most productive coaches and stand-up people the University of Michigan has ever seen.

| It is reported by John Hauser of The Ann Arbor News, 11/21, quoting Josh Helmholdt, Wolverine.com recruiting anaylst that as of noon on Tuesday Helmholt had spoken to 14 of the 16 Michigan verbal commits. Helmholt believed the majority of the commits were solid with their verbals. The exceptions were and Helmholt gave a 50/50 on them were CB Boubacar Cissoko, RB Mike Cox, LB JB Fitzgerald. The player Helmholt said most likely would NOT end up with the Wolverines was RB Sam McGuffie. | |
