{mosimage}Okay, perhaps
the writer's strike hit early out in Hollywood and affected the various
plot lines that Friday Night Lights has going on. Or perhaps when the
cast is this large, you have to spend a show or two hopping around
trying to touch upon each plot line. Whatever the reason, the sixth
episode of season 2 failed to impress. Nevertheless, let's get on with
a recap of the show.
The Panthers are in
between games and very little happened on the field this week, unless
you count the walk-on kid from Juvenile, Santiago, trying out for the team at the urging of Buddy Garrity. Though
the kid shows some speed, he has hands of stones and can't catch a
pass. And while a little stereotyping is acceptable, it's hard to
believe Santiago who is fluent in English, doesn't understand football in the least. But hey, it is what it is, a feel good underdog plot line. Other than that, the only thing that is going on with the team is Smash Williams (Gaius Charles) getting plastered by the defense without running mate Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) around to clear a path for him. This
does not sit well with the flamboyant Williams, who watching his future
slip away, asks Coach Taylor to bring back Riggins. No dice. Riggins is
in the dog house to stay. How long will the broody rebel without a
cause stay in Coach's Taylor's (Kyle Chandler) doghouse? Who knows, at least a few more weeks.
Landry (Jesse Plemons)
finally breaks down and tells his dad what happened. Then in a strange
plot twist, the dad takes the car that was used in the homicide and
burns it. Okay, so we get it, he loves Landry, but a
crime cover-up by a police officer hardly qualifies as love. But there
you have it, what happens in a Dillon family, stays in a Dillon family.
Splitsville. Landry is having trouble letting go of his star-crossed love for the Applebee's waitress. And it hurts to watch the girl of his dream flirt, or at least laugh it up with another boy. Tara (Adrianne Palicki)
is also not above a little partying on the side. Look Landry, buddy,
its sweet and all, but she is trouble and... never mind, some lessons you
have to learn on your own.
Finally Matt (Zach Gilford) makes it passed Jules, and is seen passing the time (aka making out) with the latest cheerleader-transfer to join the team. Never
really knew cheerleaders transferring schools could land the same gig
at the new school, but hey, my knowledge of these things is limited.
Still, anything is better than Julie (Aimee Teegarden), though the bratty one seems to have some regrets over the way she played Matt.
Tami Taylor's (Connie
Britton) sister comes for a visit and tries to stir up a little
trouble. Jessalyn Gilsig of Boston Public fame fills in as the fun
loving single sister. In the meantime, Eric's paycheck is
37% short, which makes him take on the part time Athletic Director
role. This sets up my favorite scene for the week, the one in which the
coach of the girl's soccer team comes in and steamrolls the good old
boy coaching staff, pointing out that the soccer balls are flat while
the footballs are plentiful. The coach is a pistol and should be a thorn on the side of Coach Taylor for weeks to come. Nothing really happened with our favorite former love triangle, except that after celebrating his birthday party, Jason Street (Scott Porter) wishes to give up coaching. Lyla (Minka Kelly) is still in spiritual nirvana, and Riggins, well, he is still Riggins, brooding over his brother's girlfriend, helplessly after Lyla, and drinking too much in the process. Otherwise it was a major uneventful week. Perhaps next week the action will pick up again. Until then we will wonder how the writer strike will affect this series. Though if they need it, I am ready to pinch hit and fill in as a writer.
