{mosimage}First off, I'm going to save the technical jargon for later but I think
an explanation is owed to fellow DeathRattlers, new visitors and the
growing base of repeat visitors as to WTF happened to the site for the
past 32 hours. Technical jargon is for later, but here is a brief
rundown of the events that transpired.
Big Turd in Face
Around 1-2 PM on Wednesday (Nov. 7) the site disappeared. I made a post about the podcast, then browsed another techie site, went back to DeathRattle and nothing. So, I call our hosting company, GoDaddy.com. For those that don't know, GoDaddy.com is the Coca-Cola or dare I say, ESPN of hosting companies. They are too damn big for their own good and don't have the customer support needed for growing sites. We've known this but were waiting to leave. Our newer service projects (software development and web development) are through a different hosting company. GoDaddy.com suspended our account because of "overusage of resources". It took about 3-4 phone calls for us to hear that explanation. There was nothing on our account to indicate this, nor an email or phone call. Nothing. Every indication available on our GoDaddy account indicated we were not even using 3% of our available resources. After calling a few more times and receiving no further explanation about this "overusage of resources" mojo we investigated the matter ourselves (or Nikki did) through search engines and called others in our field to see what it could be. Basically, we were using too many cpu's in their anal tubes. When we told GoDaddy about this feasible explanation they agreed, that's the ticket! Ok, we get it. Too many cpu's in your anal tubes. Let's move on, right? Wrong! We spent the next five hours trying to convince these people a database existed (which we had been denied access to and they refused to grant access). They could not find it. Our programmer, Nikki, even told them where it was and why they likely could not find it. Still, they said it did not exist. Without a database, there is no site. Obviously, there is a site. We were stuck in the GoDaddy twilight zone thinking they hit the delete button or something impossible. The one chump even said, "you say there is a site but we don't know that." The GoDaddy.com support staff was the rudest, dumbest bunch of arrogant twads I've dealt with in some time. Never mind that constant "holding" while they beat off to their Danica Patrick ad or Chad Johnson website. Nikki did all of the talking after I failed numerous times. Without her, I'd still be on hold with like the 100th person talking about overusage of resources. This site will now be like Barry Bonds After Steroids Long story short, they found the database right where we said. We are now with another hosting company and have our own dedicated server. In the web hosting world, you get what you pay for. DeathRattleSports.com will be much faster than before. The all around performance will be much better. You may already notice this. But once the site "settles" in to its new environment, it will only improve. We will have tons of room to grow before worrying about additional upgrades (or in this case wholesale changes) again.
This
experience has really sucked but all we can do is learn and move on.
And yeah, make fun of GoDaddy.com relentlessly. There is of course
responsibility of our own and as soon as I found out what it is I'll
tell you. But really, we apologize for this and will do all we can to prevent it in the future. Most of all, we have a provider who we can communicate with and will never shut us down abruptly and without any notification or apology. Thanks to everyone for their patience. We are always down for new ideas. It sucks the way it went down but it will be easy to see these changes were ultimately for the better. Podcast Update We are going to do the podcast with our excellent friends at BetUS.com but no contest unfortunately. Since there was no guarantee on our end, we had to pull the plug. We actually had a couple games lined up without a site even running so hopefully we can keep some of those guys in the fold for next week. Many good games next week, including the OSU-Michigan game. I plan on enjoying the podcast tomorrow and juicing up the site this weekend and beyond.
