{mosimage} Flashback to last year. It's the class 5A, Region II playoffs in the state of Texas. A state as rich as any in high school football history. The Klein Oak Panthers enter the playoffs on a sub-par, 5-5 record. All of a sudden the Panthers catch fire, winning 3 straight games against the likes of Oak Ridge, Cedar Park, and Richardson Berkner. What did they use as their source of that fire? They used lightning. The lightning produced by none other than their super quick wide receiver DeSean Hales. Hales helped the Panther's cause by scoring 9 touchdowns in the 3 victories. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they would eventually lose in the regional final to powerhouse Garland by a score of 31-14. This is not bad when you consider the fact that this all took place in Klein Oak's first year at the class 5A level (they were in class 4A in the 05-06 season). This is just one example of how a guy like DeSean Hales can help a football team win games. The great part about guys like Hales is how they can be used in so many different situations. Guys like this are so versatile and are truly the new generation of players in college football. The ultra athletes. You only have to think as far as the same first name to get a picture of who DeSean Hales resembles in many ways. DeSean Jackson, of course. Guys like these are used on punt returns, kick returns, end-arounds, wide receivers, and sometimes even line up in the backfield at the running back spot. {mosimage}
Hales burst onto the Texas high school football scene a couple of
years ago and has been tearing it up ever since. Heading into his senior season, Hales has an
astounding 4,044 all-purpose yards on just 321 touches for a whopping 12.6 yard
average per touch! He also has totaled
39 touchdowns along with a score every 8.2 times he touches the ball. Hales has a chance to end his high school
football career with more than 2,000 yards receiving, 2,000 yards rushing, AND
1,000 yards on both punt and kickoff returns! This star-studded senior pass catcher has verbally committed to the Texas Longhorns and by the looks of it they are getting a great one. As with most high school players, Hales will, of course, need to bulk up a bit. I'm not sure how he will do in a Mack Brown system that is geared more towards a traditional offense, but I definitely look for him to make an instant impact on punt and kickoff returns. That's really where the money lies in the future for this guy. He does have good hands, however, so he will be a force to be reckoned with in all areas. The million dollar question is not when will this lightning strike, but just how fast?
