{mosimage}Well as the clock winds down on the most disappointing season I have ever experienced in my 40 plus years of being a part of Husker Nation, we are facing something this weekend in Lawrence Kansas that we have never faced. For the first time since 1909, the Kansas Jayhawks are 8-0 and are leading the Big 12 North. They are also one of the nation leaders in rushing the ball averaging more than 200 yards per game, while giving up only 77 yards rushing per game. The Huskers defense; Glad you ask (sic), they now are officially the worst team in Division 1 in Rushing defense, that's right, ranked 119th against the rush giving up 243 yards and 5.4 per attempt. That is worse than Florida International, Ball State, and Frank Solich's Ohio Bobcats, who would have ever thought this would happen. On top of everything else, Sam Keller is done for the season with a broken collarbone, Sam, you were a warrior for us and it is a shame that your career with the Huskers was only 9 games long, you deserved much more. We also lost another linebacker on defense, as senior Lance Brandenburgh, who was a regular in the lineup, and was fourth on the team in tackles with 51, with 37 of them unassisted is done with a shoulder injury. Do you think the Jayhawks are drooling over this prospect? Especially since over the past four week (the month of October), the Big 12 offensive player of the week has been earned against Cosgrove's defense, those award winners have been, Chase Daniel (Missouri), Dontrell Savage (Oklahoma State), Stephen McGee (Texas A&M) and Jamaal Charles (Texas). Today, November 1, 2007 marked an historic event in Cornhusker history; the October 2007 was the first time since 1948 that the Huskers did not win a game in October. Reviewing the situation, we now have a 4th year junior in Joe Gantz who will attempt to finish out the season and prepare himself for next year, whatever that may bring. He has been outstanding the past 2 seasons, proving himself as an ultimate team player, first backing up Zac Taylor last season and then competing with and then backing up Sam Keller this season. Gantz knows how the run the offense and won't make mistakes that will kill the team, but he is not capable of turning this season around, as it is a pretty much lost cause. If they were able to "shock the world" and win out they would finish 7-5, which would earn a bowl game, but you are talking about beating Kansas in Lawrence, then beating Kansas State in Lincoln and finally beating Colorado in Boulder. How many people are going to take that bet? It is a shame, because if the team had actually played the first 3 October games as they did in the Texas game, we might still be in the hunt for the Big 12 north, instead of simply playing for pride and ending the season on a positive note. If I stay positive we can finish this season, Bill Callahan's last at 5-7, more than likely scenario will be 4-8, something that I have never, ever seen. No score prediction on this game, I believe that Kansas will win, but I still must keep the faith and GBR!
