{mosimage}Assorted thoughts on the weekend that was as we all wait in joyful hope
for the coming of USC at Oregon, LSU at Alabama, and Ohio State at Penn
State...
-Okay, so does anybody still think Oklahoma is better than LSU? Sure, the Bayou Bengals struggled earlier against Tulane for a half but OU struggled against Iowa State for most of the game. Meanwhile, the quality wins just keep piling up for LSU after they took care of a game Auburn squad. Next up, they travel to Alabama which has the potential to be another epic clash, then LSU gets Louisiana Tech and Ole Miss for a bit of a break. I'm pretty sure they're the best all-around team in the country but it's still going to be tough for them to make the title game considering all the energy they've spent up the past few weeks. -How 'bout those Oregon Ducks? I don't know if they're one of the top five teams in the country or not but it sure was fun watching them drop 55 points on Washington. Dennis Dixon is playing like a mini-Vince Young and considering what Oregon did to Michigan and how much people are talking up Mike Hart, he should be getting a lot more pub for Heisman. And how about Jonathan Stewart and his 7.2 yards per carry? Oregon can go pretty far just by outscoring people and they're a fun team to watch, but it's too bad we won't get to see them at full strength against USC. No Brian Paysinger and Cameron Colvin at wideout and no Jeremiah Johnson at running back. It'll still be an amazing game that can go either way, though. Autzen Stadium will be even more nuts than usual. -Sure, Illinois isn't a great team and Juice Williams can't throw as well as he should be able to, but Michigan's 27-17 win in Champaign was one of the most satisfying I've seen as a fan in a while. Even though I have the utmost respect for Mike Hart, part of me was almost happy and intrigued to see him sit the game out so I could see how the UM coaching staff would react. They responded by actually passing on first down, which they usually don't do unless they're forced to, and the result was great balance on offense and timely big plays. I also have to give tremendous props to Chad Henne who has battled injuries and (as well as boos) all year but courageously played through a bad shoulder to lead UM to the win. And how about Adrian Arrington, probably the most underrated receiver in the Big 10, throwing the winning TD pass off of a reverse? I miss the days when Lloyd and co. routinely ran trick plays. Let's hope they hold a few back for the Buckeyes this time. -Speaking of Illinois, why do they hate Michigan so much? I've never seen so many "Muck Fichigan" shirts in my life (well, north of C'Bus at least). It's annoying when everyone wants to be your rival (Penn State especially), but maybe that means you're doing something right. -Too bad Michigan State doesn't know how to pick up fumbles or they would have given Ohio State a real run for their money. Okay, maybe not. They had almost no yards on that Buckeye defense. This week's game in Happy Valley will be a war and might depend on which QB plays better out of Morelli and Boeckman. -Of all the weird things we've seen this season, the funniest-looking of all is probably just now when I saw a #4 next to Arizona State's name, even though they were pretty high when they had Jake Plummer, it just doesn't look right. -How about the Mighty Hoos from Charlottesville, Virginia? I thought Al Groh's Cavalier program was dead in the water after he squandered all that talent but here they are firmly entrenched in the top 25 after pulling out a close game at Maryland. I didn't think they had it in them. -Remember when Miami and FSU meant something, or at least when they played at the start of the year and everybody thought it meant something? Both teams looked so talented and fast going up against each other last year but this year's game was just a big waste of time since both teams have already been exposed as frauds. -Fans of USC, Michigan, BC, and UCLA beware: Charlie Weis is angry. And you wouldn't like him when he's angry. "I don't want to be called sarcastic, using New Jersey rhetoric," he said after the 38-0 pasting against the Trojans. "So let me just say people better enjoy it now, have their fun now." I'm sure Pete Caroll is shaking in his pleated cargo pants right about now.
