{mosimage}Since QB Demetrius Jones left Notre Dame in the fashion
he left I have been watching with interest what has transpired since.
All of this and more led me to pen an article a few weeks ago re rats
jumping ship. Not to repeat the article, but one constant pertaining to
those football players who quit the Weis football team was they were
not playing. Last week that constant changed as Olineman Matt Carufel left Notre Dame, electing not to be with the team for the Boston College game. Again, the constant that changed was Carufel was playing. At the moment he left, I do not know his depth chart position, but again, he had been playing.
It is reported that on Friday evenning Carufel was home attending the Cretin Derham-Hall game in St. Paul Mn. Nothing specific, and certainly as much as gossip as known fact, but it appears the Weis and staff coaching method caused Matt Carufel to look for greener pastures. Treatment of the players is the reason for leaving that I have heard. As has been hinted to previously, the word on the streets is this won't be the last player to bolt. Coming from high school Carufel was a Parade All- American, Gatoraide player of the year in Minnesota, and was an invitee to the AA-American game in San Antonio. Carufel is a sophomore and is reported to be considering Iowa or Minnesota. Scout.com Irish Eyes reports from Weis that he and Carufel were to speak Sunday about Carufel's future, but I have found nothing re this meeting.
Maybe as a fan of NCAA football I have watched it with blinders on, but I do not recall multiple players leaving a team during the season. This strikes me as very odd. I really wonder what is going on behind the scenes. To explain where I come from in my thought process I can remember after high school hearing about Bball players who chose not to go out for the team because the coach was a prick. I had played JV ball for a great guy and I played varsity ball for the prick. You played hard for the nice guy because you didn't want to let him down. You played hard for the prick because you didn't want him to kill you in the locker room after the game. Different coaching styles-as far as I was concerned, same results, you played hard. I remember playing Bball because I loved it and to be with my buds, not because of the coach. Anyhow, I find what is going on with Irish to be odd. I have been watching to see what if any effect all this and the losing will have on committed recruits and to date I have seen none. One further note. Notre Dame is recruiting WR Michael Floyd from Carufel's high school team. Will any of this affect that recruitment?

As a Notre Dame hater, I hope Weis stays as long as he wants to stay. Guys leaving mid-season does set off some signals. But, if we are going to use high school sports analogies, the thought of quitting occurred to me a couple of times during mid-season. I even remember quitting than asking to come back. You never know what the true situation is. But my issues usually dealt with playing time, which is a little easier to comprehend than a guy getting PT and still leaving the team behind. It Really makes you scratch your head.... |
