{mosimage}As if another possible Big Ten title or title game shot were not enough, I'm starting to look at what Jim Tressel has done since he became head coach at Ohio State and I can't help but spell the word "Dynasty." I guess the USC loss just got me thinking about the Bucks relative success. Ignoring the common pitfalls of declaring a program a dynasty midway through a football season, let me explain why I'm floating on top of clouds right now that historically are pretty much doomed for failure. First, my definition of a dynasty without quoting Webster- A run of dominating teams over a period of time. Second, my definition of a thingymajig- an interesting sounding word for make-believe titles. With Tressel OSU has a serious chance at a dynasty run; allow me to make-believe. "You Win with People" For all the crap John Cooper took when he left the Buckeyes in 2001, he did raise the bar high as far as the level of talent brought to OSU. This set up nicely for Tressel when he won the oh-so-wonderfully packaged BCS thingymajig. Tressel has won through talent he inherited, relationships long-built while winning championships at Youngstown State and a proven formula that has worked for a long time. This dynasty thing is old hat for the only man feared in a sweatervest, who won 4 title at D1AA Youngstown state from 1991-1997. He has built-in recruiting advantages in the state of Ohio that are not fair. Ohio State has won long enough (producing the most NFL players since 1994) to have a stronghold on Ohio like no man before him. This is helped by the fact that Notre Dame has not won a bowl game in any 13 year old kids life, Michigan slowly has become a factory for underachieving talent since their fictitious 1/2 of a title season in '97 and Penn State's coach is old according to anyone under the age of 80 (Sorry Grandma). Basically, most people in Ohio who enjoy football root for Ohio State. This year's recruiting class is shaping up to be the best in the Tressel era. Their 2002 class with Maurice Clarett headlining was great but the 2008 class with Terrelle Pryor looming seems to have a better head on their shoulders. Pryor is from Pennsylvania and they have had commitments form a top Florida and Texas OLinmean, Michael Brewster and J.B Shugarts. And there is more, LB Andrew Sweat from PA is another top 100 PA recruit who is on board. There are some big time in-state guys committed and other verbals looming, Jim Tressel has never had this many weapons. Ohio State 2007 is similar to Ohio State 2002 Except they are better. Seriously, better depth all the way around, another stellar defense and an offense that is better than 2002 yet some of the same vunerabilities, such as depth at an injury plagued running back position. Except this year the depth is better and Chris Well's ankle injury is much less severe that Maurice Clarretts f'ed up shoulder. I like the 2007 backups (Maurice Wells and Saine) more than the guys in 2002 (even though I'll be forever grateful). Plus, OSU has Boom Harris redshirting and he could spell relief if all 3 guys mentioned go down. The top talent and overall dept at WR and the OL is better. Todd Boeckman is a better passer than Craig Krenzel but we'll have to see if he can also go undefeated On D they are only giving up around 7 points a game as opposed to 13 in '02, but that number will rise in the coming weeks. These are truly the "Silver Bullets." The Ohio State Defensive Backfield that looked so bad in their final 2 games last year, is a true force to be reckoned with this year, with rising stars all over. I'm calling the D-Line a slight drop-off from last year but I may change my mind by year's end. The Linebacker unit is better everywhere. Special teams was better in 2002 but I see this year's unit collectively gelling into assassin's and consistent. Legendary Status Jim Tressel is already a legend in Ohio but for him to achieve a dynasty he needs OSU to be voted #1 2 of the next 5 years. This is what I was thinking last year too. With the USC dynasty said to be over by some (and said to have existed by a popular majority), 2 titles is 5 years qualifies. Hell, based on what USC has done, maybe a title win this year qualifies. In Tressel I Trust That was the motto for many Ohio State fans but one that took a blow after the whooping UF laid on Ohio State last year. For the most part, fans still stand by this but on that night in Tempe the state of Ohio was betrayed. All is not forgotten. And while the guard has been let down and title hopes rekindled (never really died), all is not forgiven and never forgotten. Ohio State went from the "class of the college football" a year ago to the ass-end of every joke. This year, the doubters are loud and clear, in particular the CBS crew, who are openly SEC Homers like NBC to Notre Dame and Fox News to the El Presidente Bush 1 & 2 . Interesting fact: the Big Ten went 2-1 against the SEC in bowl games last year. The Sweater Vest is piping hot once again. The trust factor is carefully lingering and fear is not a commonly used word. Bring on LSU, Cal and whoever else who is waiting in line with one loss. Thank god that does not include the Florida Gators.
