Random, Uncensored Thoughts on a Huge College Football Weekend Print E-mail
Written by Nick Meyer

These views do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this Web site or Lloyds Apple. Or ESPN for that matter.

-This weekend reminded us yet again that there is only one October. No, I'm not talking about the baseball playoffs, although they're pretty good. I'm talking about when the college football season really gets going as teams start conference play and the contenders are separated from the frauds.

{mosimage} -While I like having USC around as a dynasty in college football, there's nothing better than seeing them lose. Unless of course you get to see them lose to a 41-point underdog.

-So what if Jim Harbaugh said a few not-so-nice things about my Wolverines, I still respect the hell out of the guy. He has that "it," or at least had it as a player, and now, he may have it as a coach.

-As long as Ohio State has Jim Tressel, Michigan has Lloyd Carr, and Penn State has JoePa, the Buckeyes should always, always, always be the pre-season favorite in the Big Ten.

OSU has it made with Tressel calling the shots in this conference with their unbeatable combination of talent and coaching.

-It's painful to watch Purdue go up against a top-tier team these days. I have a lot of admiration for what Joe Tiller did in bringing Big Ten offenses to the modern era, but the Boilers are just kind of spinning their wheels right now as a program.

Tiller also has made his defenses a lot faster than ever before, as evidenced by the surprising number of pros they've produced lately, but their recent (and forthcoming) collapses only illustrate the point that you can't win in the Big Ten consistently without a lot of beef in the middle of the D-line.

Purdue's offense would also benefit greatly from a running quarterback. Curtis Painter is simply too robotic in the pocket and that makes Purdue a one-dimensional team.

-You can't help but feel good for Les Miles, who has been taking tons of heat in Baton Rouge for not winning the big game. Unfortunately, there's still a long way to go and a tough schedule to navigate including Florida in the SEC title game most likely.

Don't expect the Tigers to go undefeated.

-I can't remember a less-anticipated Michigan game than this past week's against Eastern Michigan. And yet somehow, it was an even more boring game than anyone expected.

Michigan showed no emotion yet again, Carr and his staff put no effort into the gameplan as UM made the game much closer than it ever should have been.

I mean come on, EMU had a 5'8 white guy covering Adrian Arrington on the perimeter and we still let them stick around into the 3rd quarter. I really, really hope Lloyd walks away this year and takes his good buddy (and worthless offensive coordinator) Mike DeBord with him.

-Speaking of terrible game-day coaching, how about Tommy Bowden and the Clemson Tigers? How do you let Va Tech of all teams drop 41 points on you??? I'm speechless.

-Enough already about how Wisconsin was so overrated at #5. They had the longest winning streak in the country. Voters had no choice to put them there because the best other options were frauds like USF and Boston College.

How about we give some props to the Badgers for an impressive 14-game winning streak instead of harping on how dumb the pollsters are for a change.

-Everyone seems to be asking if Illinois is for real. Are they a league title contender? Probably not, but give it a year or two and they might be.

-What do you know, I correctly predicted the Detroit Free Press' headline for Michigan State's epic meltdown against Northwestern: "Same Ol' Sparty."

Hmm, maybe I have a future in this business after all.

well it is kind of harsh to call them frauds but everyone knows they dont have the overall talent of teams like Florida, USC, Oklahoma, etc.

so i dont think they're real national title contenders at this point is what I'm saying
