Notre Dame has shocked the world with their incredible rise in the Associated Press rankings. With their 20-6 win Saturday over UCLA, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are back on top of the college football world at last. The Irish received all but one first place vote in this week's AP poll, finishing ahead of #2 LSU and setting them up for a possible run at a BCS title game berth. "I think it's clear at this point that the University of Notre Dame is a different football team. They're clearly deserving of being the number one team in the nation, heck, I'll go ahead and say it since we're all thinking it- the history of the world," said Lou Holtz, the former Irish coach who voted them #1 this week. Fellow AP voter Beano Cook agreed. "Notre Dame has always had the material," said Cook in a telephone interview. "It was just a matter of them getting on the same page and playing the way we all knew they could. They put on an impressive display against a team that was top-15 earlier this year." "Oh, and the Big Ten is not that good. Notre Dame would win that league if they played in it. The only reason they're 1-5 is because they have the toughest schedule in the nation," added Cook, who abrubtly hung up the phone hanging up after being reminded the Irish had already lost four games to Big Ten schools this season. Jimmy Clausen led he Irish with 84 yards in the win against UCLA, dazzling the crowd with an impressive array of short passes, dump-offs, and check-downs, prompting Cook to make a prediction on the freshman's future. "I'll tell you this right now, Clausen will win four Heismans by the time he leaves South Bend. It's definitely not too late for that at this point." Clausen quickly boarded his private jet and returned to South Bend to hold an impromptu press conference, at which he predicted Notre Dame was still on schedule to win four national championships in his career after the big win. USC received the other top vote in the AP poll, but it was not known who voted for them at press time. Speculation was that the vote was cast by ESPN Analyst Mark May, but May was found hanging from his tie in the ESPN Studios' bathroom in Bristol, Connecticut some ten minutes after the Trojans' loss to Stanford in an apparent suicide attempt. FSN's Petros Papadakis is thought to be the person who voted USC #1, but he's not actually a member of the Associated Press and poll officials say they were unsure as to how his ballot found its way to their offices. The Irish received zero votes in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.
