Upset Saturday. Unthinkable results. Who would have guessed it? ME.
No, I don't have any fearless predictions to prove my case. So, maybe I did not "guess" it, but I'm not as shocked as everyone on the boob-tube tries to be. Let's review the upsets, with some analyses and facts. We entered the weekend with 4 teams that have clearly separated themselves from competition according to the ESPN goons. This includes USC, LSU, Oklahoma and the Florida Gators. USC wins by 3 over the Washington Huskies. This is Washington's 3rd loss and was their closest defeat. LSU beats Tulane. They struggled for a bit only to beat them with ease. Now for the other two teams who had clearly separated themselves.... {mosimage} Oklahoma lost at Colorado. Ok, this was a little shocking. But in efforts to back my slowly progressing point, it was not 1/10 as surprising as Michigan losing to Appalachian State. Plus, what the hell made Oklahoma so great besides knowing how to destroy subpar teams. The have a Freshman QB, they lost their Bowl game a year ago to Boise State and with Bob Stoops once being the greatest big game coach of all-time (another old myth I've heard repeated this year) I can't remember the last big game he actually won. He lost a big one here and reality proves to be a bitch (join the Charlie Weis fanclub--the one that said with 4 weeks to prepare for a bowl game he'd be unbeatable). Florida loses to Auburn. Again, I did not expect this but Auburn is freaking Auburn. They lost to USF, but the Bulls are pretty damn good too. And yeah, the Tigers beat the Gators last year too before UF went on to win the Bullshit Championship Series. Now for the other top teams who lost.... #5 West Virginia is "upset" by USF, a team they lost to at home last year. Again, rankings don't mean shit, they are a made up by people who can't help but be biased. It's all politics. When a team loses to a team they lost to the year before at home, it's not a big upset at all. #7 Texas Vs. Kansas State was again, not a big upset at all. I picked Texas to win by 3 but I also said it could go either way. Texas has sucked this year and Kansas State beat them last year. Sound familiar? Maryland beat #10 Rutgers. C'mon, if you say you are shocked you are either an idiot or a liar. #13 Clemson loses at Georgia Tech. I think GT started the season ranked higher but I'm not totally sure about that. Either way, it's a mild upset at best. I picked Clemson to win big but whatever, it's not an upset to include among the craziest upsets ever What now? This leaves us with two teams who could possibly be the greatest teams of all-time. What qualifies them as possibly the greatest of all-time? Well, they started out ranked high and have not lost. This means they won't drop in the polls unless they lose. USC may have the greatest D ever but from what I've seen they are NOT the greatest ever. Top 5 in college football this year, maybe, but greatest ever lists are for Mark May and Kirk Herbstreit to worry about. Same with upsets. Us fans should sit back and enjoy. It's not an upset, it's college football. It's the 85 scholarship limit. It's guys leaving top programs early for the NFL. It's smaller programs developing players within their system for 5 years so they can take down the over-hyped big dawgs. Name a team and I'll give you 5 reasons they won't win the title. Who are my top 5? Who the hell cares. USC, LSU, OSU, Cal, Wisconsin, ect. are among the top ranked undefeated teams, so I give them the all the best chance for a mythical title but I clearly don't know who the best team is nor will I probably ever know who the best team is because voter's decide who plays in the title game. Bottom line, college football is a good time. All this upset talk, greatest team ever chatter and rankings nonsense is fiction built to generate interest and headlines. For the upteenth year in a row, it's working.
