{mosimage}Not much good news around the UM program right now, so I thought I'd take a crack at constructing the UM pro team.
QB- Tom Brady, Brian Griese- This was a tough call between Brady and Drew Henson, but I stuck with Brady. Oh wait, this is 2007, nevermind. Brady is easily the second-best QB in the league behind Peyton Manning and now that he actually has a good receiving corps, he just might lay claim to being the best in the league. Griese is a solid backup as long as he avoids tripping over his dog. RB- Anthony Thomas, Chris Perry- It's hard to believe a team so run-dominated hasn't produced better pros, but injuries and a history of playing backs as freshman all the way until they're seniors are to blame. Thomas is still a steady power back with great vision and solid speed. Perry would have been a good back in my opinion as one Bengals coach said he got to the corner faster than any back he'd ever seen, until he suffered multiple injuries that is. FB-B.J. Askew, Aaron Shea, and Kevin Dudley- Askew is a versatile guy who can catch and run and Dudley is a solid blocker. Aaron Shea isn't on a roster but had a good run with the Browns as an H-back type. WR- Braylon Edwards, Amani Toomer, Jason Avant, Steve Breaston- Edwards is coming into his own and would be deadly on the deep ball with Brady throwing him the ball. Toomer is dependable and versatile as the number two when healthy. Avant is the third WR for the Eagles with great hands, and Breaston can play some slot. TE- Jerame Tuman, Mark Campbell- Both are great in-line blockers with good hands, although they aren't burners by any stretch. They will help the team's power running game. Campbell is out for the year and that has hurt the Saints' running game. OL- Jeff Backus, Steve Hutchinson, David Baas, Jon Jansen, Jon Runyan- Backus is dependable at left tackle, Hutchinson is the best guard in the NFL and will help him out, Baas is a good backup for the Niners and can play center. Jansen will slide over to guard (although he is out for the year), and Runyan is mean and immensely powerful at RT. DL- James Hall, Gabe Watson, Alan Branch, LaMarr Woodley- Due to poor coaching and recruiting, this is the weakest spot on the team. Watson and Branch can eat up space while Hall and Woodley are solid pass rushers, though. Considering the linebacker depth, playing a 3-4 might work here although one of the defensive ends will be undersized (Branch can slide to DE). LB- Cato June, Larry Foote, Ian Gold, David Harris- This position boasts incredible speed and talent with the first three, and Harris is a rookie who can help a ton against the run. The Cover-2 might be ideal with the speed of these linebackers. June was a safety in college but was wisely moved to LB where he became a Pro Bowler. CB- Charles Woodson, Leon Hall, Brandon Williams- Woodson has had a hard time living up to expectations but he's a multiple-Pro Bowler and should have been one last year after finally being healthy and regaining form. Hall is great in zone coverage on the other side and makes good plays on the ball. Williams is for depth. S- Marlin Jackson, Ty Law- Michigan is short on safeties so these two have to move over. Jackson played safety in college and has been great as a starter at CB in Indy. Law still has some left in the tank and has the skills to move to safety if needed. K- Jay Feely KR- Steve Breaston Overall: With Brady and a great offensive line, this team would have a chance to put up some excellent offensive numbers. The defense is solid in the back but up front is a question mark. Overall, if this were a real NFL team, I'd pick them to go 7-9 or 8-8. Depth of course would be an issue, though.
