{mosimage} Typical qualifier: Don't like Charlie Weis or Notre Dame. Recitation of facts(as we understand them): 1. Notre Dame went into spring ball with 4 QB's. 2. One QB transfers. 3. The "Golden Boy" Jimmy Clausen has an injury. 4. Through fall camp Coach Weis says the QB race is wide open, refusing to name a starter until the week of the Georgia Tech game. 5. Demetrius Jones is named the starter for the Georgia Tech game. He plays less than 2 quarters and is pulled for junior Evan Sharpley. Later, Sharpley is pulled for Jimmy Clausen. None of the QB's play well. 6. Clausen is named the starter for the Penn State game. Coach Weis says "Clausen gives us the best chance to win". Weis also says Clausen was the best QB in the spring, and but for the injury would have been the starter going into the fall camp. 7. Clausen QB's against Penn State, plays the entire game-I believe. Doesn't look good. 8. Demetrius Jones doesn't get on the team bus for the Michigan game, says he is transfering to Northern Illinois. Apparently, says nothing to the Notre Dame Coaches. 9. Clausen looks bad against Michigan. In mop up time, replaced by Sharpley who also doesn't impress. So, for ND fans, and for many of us who are not, the debate rages as to what the hell is going on here? I believe you can make the following assumptions: 1. Jones made the decision when he did so he would be eligible to play next year. 2. No one should quit his team and coaches without telling them. 3. Quitting without informing indicates a lack of respect. Range of thoughts, ie emotions that we have encountered: 1. Demetius Jones is a quitter and good ridance to him. 2. Demetrius sucked at Qb so good bye. 3. Demetrius will regret this decision for the rest of his life. 4. Demetrius was lied to by his coach, justifying his decision to leave. 5. By deciding not to QB Notre Dame this year at least means the Notre Dame Oline won't get him killed and he will live to play again. Our thoughts: 1. Demetrius should have informed his team and the coaches. 2. Our guess is he was mislead by Charlie Weis. With that, and with the handwriting on the wall, Jones made a decision that was in his best football interest. 3. Hard to call a quarter and a half against Georgia Tech as a fair shot. A couple of questions 1. Knowing Michigans absolute inability against mobile QB's, was Jones in the game plan against Michigan. If so, him leaving really was bad. If he wasn't part of the game plan, why not, and can anyone doubt what the handwriting on the wall said? 2. What does this Weis/Jones thing say to potential recruits? You are constantly hearing recruits discuss relationships with the coach, issues such as trust. How does it play if players begin to hear a coach isn't straight with his players? Breaking it down further, how does this situation sit with black players and players from Chicago? 3. Assuming the season remains well south of the average border, does the cumulative affects of this teams performance, the past years of futility against ranked opponents and in bowl games, the perception of Weis as a prick, Jones, etc., begin to evidence itself on the recruiting boards. As with many other things this should be interesting to watch.
