2008 High School recruit Jack Elway -Son of John Elway Print E-mail

John "Jack"Albert Elway III, the son of former Denver Bronco star John Elway, is starting to make headlines the same way his famous father once did. Jack is currently the starting quarterback for high school powerhouse Cherry Creek in Colorado. Sporting a number 7 jersey like Elway senior, the 6-3, 195 lbsyoungster is already able to throw the ball a good 65-70 yards. Besides the obvious arm strength, Jack also has the uncanny ability to run out of the pocket when he feels pressured. Add to those physical qualities the leadership flair that made his father a Super Bowl champ, and you have a blue chip high school recruit in the making. Though some may be quick to attribute all his athletic abilities to his father, it should be noted that his mother Janet was an accomplished swimmer as well, and the fabulous genetic make-up seems to be inherited from both sides of the family.

This season, to help in the development of his son, John Elway has taken over as quarterback coach for the school. It was a commitment that seemed a long time in coming, but one in which the ultra busy John Elway had not found the time to make until recently. But least anyone thinksthat the job of being the starting quarterback for the team was just handed to Jack, one should know that the kid made his way unto the starting line-up from off the junior varsity squad where he was both a QB and a Linebacker. Last year he quarterbacked the JV team to an overall 8-2 record, while still finding time to get in some plays with the varsity squad.

Elway kicked off the new season in fine fashion against Montebello, leading his team to a decisive 35-7 victory. Elway's prolific passing netted him 242 yards on the air (on 17 out of 25 completions) to go along with 4 touchdowns. Numbers that would make any recruit dream of scholarships to come. Yet ever wanting to keep improving, Jack has noted that there is plenty still to work on, like making the correct reads on plays. The more comfortable he seems to get out there, the easier it's becoming for him to make the reads he has said. Though there is also added pressure in having to carry on the famous last name, the highly competitive son of the former NFL great seems to like and thrive under the added pressure.

Already this season, Jack Elway has caught the eye of some of the nations best college programs, with LSU, Oregon and Colorado State all extending the young prospect scholarship offers. Look for more scouts to come out to Cherry Creek's game this year to check out football's latest Elway.
