{mosimage}I would love to give you my impressions of the Akron game, but didn't
see it. Thank you cable companies and The Big Ten Network! Ya'll suck!
Anyway, from what I gathered, the offense was not much, the defense was awesome. We go into the Washington game with the statistically #1 defense. Apparently, Akron could do nothing against our D. I really can't single anyone out, not having seen the game, but have been hearing much about Homan. I will be interested to see how his playing time is handled. The missing element to date is a serious lack of take aways. We believe we have playmakers on D. We need to see some turnovers.
One would guess our defense will be challenged this week. The Husky QB is big and mobile. I read somewhere the coaches like to run him "only" 10 to 15 times per game to keep him healthy. My question is-if he runs 15 times against the Bucks will he kill us, or will he be kilt? Again, thinking back to Freeman, will he deliver a blow or take the blow? I believe Locker is a redshirt freshman, which puts him in a difficult position against our D. Of course the nightmare senario is can we defend a big, mobile QB any better than our zero & two neighbors to the north. Locker does have Boise State under his belt which I guess qualifies as having played in a big game. You want to see the moblie QB pay for leaving the pocket, or keeping the ball on an option. Should be interesting to watch. Under Coach Tressel, we seem to build and add as the season progresses. It will be fun to see what we may add to the defensive game plan this week. Adjustments on the run are always interesting. I, pre Debacle in the Desert, thought that was one of our strengths. Wells 40 run Vs. Akron....just a taste... {youtube}LTqvbVA2LzY{/youtube} Our offense........ Yes we ended up with some decent production in the running game, but I am not hearing anyone was very excited about our running game. We wanted our running game to come out and be dominate to allow our new QB and receivers time to adjust to the game. Unfortunately, through two games we have needed to pass to run. I see no reason for optimism that we can come out of the gate and play smashmouth with Washington. Will we come out with 3 wides and attempt to loosen the Huskies up or will we attempt to establish Wells at the start? If we try are we looking at 3 and outs in the 1st quarter? Turnovers-5 against Akron. Does anyone think we can beat a decent team with 5 turnovers? That better stop now. On the road it is always a goal to establish yourself quickly to deflate the home crowd. With the Huskies recent past, the crowd can be deflated. A turnover has the opposite result, firing up the team and the crowd. Don't turn the ball over. Ray Small is expected to see his first action this week. I would love to have confidence that he will break out, stretching the field vertically, and making plays on the quick hitters or the flanker screens. Truthfully, I don't see it. I said before, he needed fall camp as much as anyone, and he didn't get it. How we attempt to use him should give us a clue as to how the coaches view him, and how they view the other receivers. Last, it is kindof neat to hear the two coaches speak about each other and the game. It seems these two coaches "do it right". It would be great if one had the ability to hear one of these coaches discuss the coaches that "don't do it right" and hear the whys behind those opinions. Should be a fun game Saturday and one the TV Gods will permit me to watch.
