Not a whole lot of Buckeye news finding its way to South Florida. With
the injury to Lawrence Wilson, Robert Rose has been penciled in as this
weeks starter.
Robert is a true sophomore. His redshirt year was burnt with mop up duty. For those who follow such things Rose getting meaningful time is something we have looked forward to. He dominated the high school All American game from his Defensive end position. He was quick on quick. Although listed in the roster at 6'5", 260 pounds, he appears to be much bigger. Has he lost some quickness, don't know. Based on what we saw in that all star game, we expected Robert to make an early splash. That didn't happen. Seeing him bulk up made us believe he would slide into the defensive interior this year. Don't really think that was happening this year either. So, what is the deal with Robert? Does he know the schemes? Does he take to many plays off? Why hasn't he become a meaningful part of the defensive package? Due to Wilson's injury, we are about to find out. It bears watching. The team will need Rose to be a solid contributor. The news as we understand it is that Wilson looks to be on the shelf for 6 to 8 weeks. We very well may need him in 6 to 8 weeks. For what it is worth-which is nothing as I watched the game last Saturday in a bar with no sound, Wilson seemed to be our dominate lineman until he went down. We may see Ray Small at wide receiver this weekend. Said it before on DeathRattle, we think missing camp and games is exactly what Small did not need. Hopefully he is healthy and can contribute Saturday. I guess this is a Cleveland Glenville article as opposed to a Buckeye article as the last thing we wanted to mention concerns the status of true freshman Jermele Hines. Rose, Small, and Hines all hail from Glenville. Hines did not dress last Saturday. This has to be something to do with admissions. Coach Tressel has expressed confidence Jermele will be with the team. Our impression had been that Hines had played himself out of a redshirt year in fall camp, looking to be a special teams contributor. We shall see. Saturday was not only the first day of snook season, the opening day for the Buckeyes, but also the first day formal offers could go out to 2009 football recruits. Obviously Jordan Whiting from Kentucky got one as he did verbally commit. Storm Klein apparently got one. We are assuming Johnny Simon got one. We really don't know who else was offered early. Speaking of Simon, from what we are hearing he is a beast at Defensive tackle. Not to be guilty of over hype, but BEAST is what we are hearing. Certainly, watch his recruitment.
