{mosimage}Well, it took one game before Charlie Weiss has turned to the "Golden
Boy", Jimmy Clausen. Jimmy will be starting on the road at Penn State,
a night game. Charlie said Jimmy was the best QB in the spring, but
was slowed this fall by injury. He says Jimmy gives his team its best
chance to win.
So how do you see this? I'm not sure how I view this. A couple of thoughts. First, I feel sorry for Jones. He had no chance against Georgia Tech. Don't claim to be an expert, but in my opinion, neither the team, nor the scheme gave Jones a chance. So it looks like Jones got less than one half in what was either his first action or at least his first start and he is benched. Bummer to be him.
Sharpley? Looked OK when he wasn't being killed. My guess is he will be the backup as his style and Clausen's are most compatable. He got a quarter or so and I guess- bummer to be him, also. So what do we have? If you watched the Georgia Tech/Notre Dame game you saw suspect receivers, no pass protection(9 sacks), and no running game. Against Penn State you have to figure the passing attack will be quick, featuring tight ends and running backs. I assume Clausen can roll out, and if he can, they have to roll him out again to save his ass from the pass rush. Obviously, ND will try to run the ball. I wonder what the spread is for this game. For the future. If healthy, I expected to see Clausen starting, but not for awhile. Starting with GT, Penn State, and Michigan I thought was a prescription for a QB beat down and I thought Clausen would be saved from this. Is it possible that Charlie is using Clausen to get the alum off his back? Nobody will now talk about the GT game. The conversation is and will be Clausen. Did Charlie change the subject? Recruiting-Again, not fair to Jones, less than one half, but if he continued to start, how do you recruit great receivers if a sophomore is starting who doesn't appear to able to pass. Seems to me that it is easier to recruit if you can say this year is an investment for the future-come join us with an experienced QB. So I guess is that is how I see this. Charlie knows the team sucks, but will get better through the year with experience, and better in the future with additional recruits. Might as well sacrifice today for tomorrow. The fact that the other two QB's drew the short end of this stick, too bad. The fact is that Charlie probably has now bought the season with the alum. They will now give Clausen time to grow-good for Charlie. Maybe he is a genius after all.
