{mosimage} The Michigan game is a no win situation. If you beat them it's like great, we did what we HAD to do to avoid embarrassment. If you lose, well maybe Appalachian State should become the 12th team in the Big 10 that is 11. The Michigan troubles started when when Jim Tressel became the Ohio State Head coach, which he has followed with a 5-1 record against Lloyd Carr. But for me their "letdowns" really began to show in their losing performance to Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl. Their defense sucked, their offense made plays but everything was hectic. USC has cruised against them twice in the Rose Bowl, most notably last year when "Michigan should have played OSU for the fictitious BCS Championship"--according to some. It's the Big Ten's fault that Michigan let's them down because the Wolverines have beat everyone in their path but Ohio State. Sure, Illinois is on the rise but they lost to Missouri. Could have it been different with Juice William not getting hurt? Sure, if you like to make excuses. Minnesota got beat by Bowling Green, a MAC school. Sure, they came back from 21 down at halftime to only lose by 1, they could have won but they clearly did not. Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State did what they were supposed to do. Are any of the unbeatable or even a top 10 team, we'll see. Then there is Michigan, who lost to Division 1AA 2-time champion Appalachian State. I saw them in their tourney run last season and remember them tearing up Youngstown State. QB Armanti Edwards and the Mountaineers looked good. It never occurred to me they could beat Michigan. Clearly they did. Now it is up to every Big 10 school to prove that Appalachian State is not better than them. What, that's not fair? Too bad this is college football and you guys fucked up, prepare to be harassed. The Wolverines are officially the outcast of the Big Ten conference, no doubt. Every year the Big 10 has too many teams in too high of bowl games because they travel well, but this year could be a rare exception. If Michigan only loses 2 conference games and beats, say Ohio State, PSU or Wisconsin---that looks bad. That gives the Big East a right to talk shit. And that is why Meechigan is an outcast. Damned if you do damned if you don't. I know one thing, if Michigan can't shore up defensively they'll be the ones that look bad. Would you put money on them over Illinois, PSU, OSU, Michigan State or Wisconsin? The best thing from a conference standpoint is that Michigan wins the rest of their non-conference games, including against Oregon next week. Then, they drop a few games in Big 10 play only to barely make a bowl game, where they have matured and beat up on a MAC power or Notre Dame. Now those are some goals.

I watched the replay of the game last night (I actually get the Big Ten Network on Direct TV). Several observations on what happened Saturday: 1. The defense didn't tackle well at all in the first half. 2. Chad Henne had a very poor game throwing the ball (Manningham 1 catch for 4 yds in the 1st half) 3. Hart was benched with a thigh bruise in the 1st quarter and wasn't put back into the game until 1 minute left in the 3rd. When he got back on the field he looked like Jim Brown. Then Michigan tried to throw and Henne looked like Jim Brown throwing the ball. Michigan scores late and has a chance for a very important 2pt conversion and takes Hart out of the game, the backup runs the ball and slips in the backfield. 4. A fundamental mistake by Michigan's defensive captain on the field goal to win the game resulted in a block. 5. Appalachain State is good and has great speed. They were well prepared and outplayed Michigan. It was not a fluke or a lucky game, the Mountaineers deserved to win. -It was a sad day for Michigan football and will indeed look bad if they beat some of the Big Ten's top programs |
