{mosimage}In a Houston Area Opening game, made for media match-up, the Cy-Fair Bobcats led by Michigan declared star Sam McGuffie lost to the Stanford bound quarterback Andrew Luck's Stratford Spartans 21 to 17 Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Tully Stadium.
To compound the loss even more, McGuffie left the game for good early in the second quarter, spraining his ankle when he was "horse-collar tackled inside the 10 yard line on a Bobcat drive that led to a field goal and an early 10-7 led. Andrew Luck, the Stanford bound quarterback, who is the son of former Houston Oiler quarterback Oliver Luck, went on to pass for 15-of-33 passing for 228 yards and two touchdowns, and carried nine times for 75 yards and a score. Believe it or not, Luck actually out-rushed McGuffie 75 yard to 66. {mosimage} Luck hit Bredthauer for a 52-yard gain on the second play of the third quarter. Luck capped the five-play, 97-yard march that with a dazzling 28-yard touchdown run that gave Stratford all the points it would need and provided a 21-10 lead late in the third quarter. Cy-Fair responded with a six-play, 69-yard drive that ended in an 11-yard touchdown run by Wesley Cobb that cut the lead to 21-17. Stratford's defense took over from there. The Spartans held Cy-Fair to 31 net yards in the fourth quarter on four drives. Cy-Fair's best chance to score came with under four minutes to go when the Bobcats reached the Stratford 22, but a sack by defensive lineman Jimmy Burge on quarterback Gavin West on third-and-9 put that threat to rest. "The defense saved our (rears)," Luck said. "They're great and they're very overlooked. The win was big for the Spartans not only to get the season started on the right foot, but to redeem a season-opening loss to the Bobcats last season. And to prove that they aren't just a one-man show. "This is a huge win for us," Burge said. "Everybody knows Cy-Fair is a great team. To come out like this and get a four-point win, it makes us very happy." Luck is the No. 1 QB prospect in the state of Texas, according to Rivals.com, and he's ranked fourth in the nation at his position. Last season, the 6-4, 215-pound senior led Stratford to a 10-2 record and the Spartans' first district title since 1988, throwing for 2,909 yards and 27 touchdowns. McGuffie had a sensational junior season in which he rushed for 3,121 yards and 43 touchdowns in 14 games, an average of 222.9 yards per game.
