{mosimage} In approximately seven days, more than 80,000 Red clad die-in-the-wool, Husker faithful will be packing Memorial Stadium for an NCAA record 283rd consecutive time on Saturday, September 1, 2007 @ 2:30 PM CDT. 5th year senior Sam Keller will be leading the Huskers again the University of Nevada Wolf Pack, who finished the 2006 season with a 8-4 record, including a 21-20 loss to the University of Miami in the MPS Computer Bowl. This will be my 40th season of following my Big Red, which most of you know included a NCAA division one record of 33 straight 9 wins or more seasons, 35 straight bowl appearances, and 5 National Championships. I am hoping that Bill Callahan is able to continue to build the team into a contender, and based on this year recruiting class for the 2008 team, momentum appears to be building that direction. On Friday the team voted on the captains for this year's squad, and they include a familiar name with Husker faithful. The captains will be Brett Byford, Zack Bowman and Bo Ruud. Ruud's selection was of little surprise. The Lincoln Southeast grad's father Tom was a captain (1974) and brother Barrett (2004) was a captain. Fittingly, his father was at Friday's practice. Bowman's selection was a little surprising, considering the fact that he missed all of last year with an ACL injury. Bowman is the first Husker from Alaska to be named as a captain. Byford, took over the starting center duties last season, is referred to as "Bama" to his teammates. He has been with the program since 2003, but crept mostly under the radar. On a positive note both returning junior running backs; Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn were able to practice for a 2007 fall practice record of 3 straight days. For the Huskers to have any chance whatsoever of cracking the top 15, let alone the top 10 both are going to need to stay healthy the entire season. We have a great stable of freshmen back, but you can't go to war without any experience. The Huskers did practice in full pads once again Friday, and according to offensive coordinator Shawn Watson "We're not backing off at all," Watson said. "There's things that we (needed) to get done (Friday) and things we need to get done (Saturday) that pertain to situational football." Training camp has given way to traditional in-season practices. Watson said the last few days have seen a good share of time dedicated to preparing for Nevada. "We just need to keep grinding through it," Watson said. "We had another really good day. You get a sense it's all coming together."
