Highlighting Jason Campbell, the starting Quarterback for the Washington Redskins.

When the 2007 NFL Season begins in September, Joe Gibbs and the Washington Redskins will rely on young quarterback Jason Campbell to lead the team into the NFC playoffs. Last season, Campbell was named the starter for the last seven games after Mark Brunell was unable to stretch the field and produce points. It wasn’t an easy seven games for Campbell at all. He won only two games and produced average stats at best. However, the coaching staff as well as the Redskin fan base saw something that they forgot existed, a vertical passing game. Campbell’s big arm and ability to zip passes downfield is why the Redskins feel they made the right choice when they traded up and snagged him 25th overall in 2005, but what else has the rest of the team as well as the Redskins’ fan base optimistic about Jason Campbell?

I remember the game against the Carolina Panthers. The Skins were down, 13-10 late in the fourth quarter. The headsets went out on the Redskin bench so Jason Campbell didn’t know what play Gibbs wanted to run. The play clock was running down and the young QB had to make a quick decision. Campbell thought of a play that he vividly knew from practice and decided to run it. The rest is history. Chris Cooley caught a beautiful ball from Campbell and took it 66 yards down the field for the touchdown and the win. It was that play that displayed the quick thinking and leadership of the young quarterback.

In the off-season, Jason took further steps to improve his game as well as become a team leader. The only constant at Redskins Park in the off-season was Jason Campbell, who decided to stay in the area to study film and work out with his receivers. Getting a rhythm with Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, Antwaan Randle El, and Brandon Lloyd will be very important if the team wants to improve on the 5-11 record from last year. Many of the offensive players are amazed at how well Campbell has grasped the Al Saunders playbook since last season and are confident that it will payoff on game day.

During the Redskins’ first preseason game of the 2007 season against the Tennessee Titans, Campbell found pressure early and often, but managed to get off some beautifully thrown passes that gave the fans of D.C. a sigh of relief. The biggest correction that Campbell will need to make is picking up the blitz a lot better and holding on to the football (During the 14-6 victory over the Titans on Saturday, Jason Campbell lost the ball twice when confronted with pressure from Tennessee). Redskin fans will have to be patient with young Campbell this season. Yes, he has a lot of promise and will be a very good quarterback in the future. He will have to go thru some growing pains first that may come early and often this season.
