Which coaches are in jeopardy of getting the axe during or after the 2007 NFL season?
It’s the same story every season, a group of coaches who get the boot at the end of the NFL season. This year, there are a few head coaches who may have overstayed their welcome and may be out on the street after the season. {mosimage}Tom Coughlin – New York Giants This will be Coughlin’s last chance to produce a competitive team in New York. It will be harder to do now that Tiki Barber is in the NBC Studio booth and the tension of the current players still exists. In 2005, the Giants won the NFC East division only to lose to the Carolina Panthers in the first round of the playoffs. Last year, New York barely made it to the playoffs with an 8-8 record and couldn’t get past the Eagles in the Wildcard game. If Coughlin is unable to produce a winner and help to elevate Eli Manning’s play on the field, he will be out of a job at the end of the season. Jon Gruden – Tampa Bay Buccaneers Under Gruden, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had only one winning record since their Super Bowl victory in 2002. He’s gotten so desperate that he’s brought in every quarterback on the street to help this team out. Gruden may very well be in hot water if he can’t get this team back to their winning ways this season. John Fox – Carolina Panthers John Fox’s seat may not be as hot as Coughlin’s and Gruden’s, but it’s pretty warm if you ask me. Although the Panthers made it to the NFC Championship in 2005, they took a nose dive last year and finished 8-8. With a lot of NFL franchises scooping up young coaches, it’s not hard to imagine John Fox losing his job at the end of the 2007 season. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Fox leaves Carolina to coach the Giants in 2008. Norv Turner – San Diego Chargers Believe me, if know anything about Norv Turner’s history, then you should know that he’s always on the hot seat. With the talent that the San Diego Chargers have, they better be in the Super Bowl or at least the AFC Championship. Norv is a great offensive mind, but a lousy coach. San Diego’s front office will have a hawk eye on Norv’s entire operations. Jack Del Rio – Jacksonville Jaguars In the four seasons Del Rio has been the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, he’s only been to the playoffs once. They were destroyed by the Patriots 28-3. This season may be a “put up or get out” year for Del Rio. He’s has a talented enough group to make a viable run for the playoffs every year but his team’s seem to run out of steam towards the end of the season. If Jacksonville stumbles in 2007, Jack Del Rio may stumble out the front door, suitcase and all.
