{mosimage}Saturday’s morning Practice, the first of two-a-days in Memorial stadium had one thing missing that wasn’t hard to notice. There were no, zero, none, nada, running backs that were on the roster from last season present and participating. Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn both skipped practice...
{mosimage}Lucky walked away from Memorial Stadium with a head injury, believed to be a minor concussion suffered during the early part of the scrimmage, and Glenn missed the workout entirely with a sore right hamstring. This is disturbing because Glenn missed most of the final 2 months of last season with a bad foot. "There we go again," NU coach Bill Callahan said, "always talking about these injuries." Yea, I have to when you consider that the top replacement was a freshman defensive back last season, and the other 3 (Quentin Castille, Roy Helu and Marcus Mendoza) are true, first year “deer in the headlights” freshman, so you’re talking about a grand total of zero carries at the NCAA Division one level here. The scrimmage which consisted of 20 plays was held at the end of a two-and-a-half practice. "I thought the tempo was good," Callahan said. "I thought they competed hard for 20 plays, just trying to get back and condition them into scrimmage tempo. A lot of guys flashed, but until we get back, turn the film on and really look at it, we'll see." According to some player accounts, the defense controlled the scrimmage, although they were the ones who had to run sprints at the end of the scrimmage. "It is what it is," cornerback Andre Jones said. "The gassers at the end, we didn't want to do them, yeah, but we did them, and it's just getting us better for the games." The defense had set a goal of forcing 2 turnovers at the scrimmage; they got one on a Rickey Thenarse's interception. Apparently, Mendoza also nearly lost a fumble, but the ball was awarded to the offense. Several Huskers conveniently failed to remember which quarterback threw the interception as the battle for the number 1 quarterback continued with Sam Keller and Joe Gantz.
