Ah the dog days of summer, that is what they call the month of
August and that is what the calendar shows when you look at it,
August. But yet this week across the country, at all the colleges
Fall Practice has begun. Wide-eyed, “deer in the
headlights” newbie freshman don’t have a clue on what
to expect and come in totally unprepared for what is about to hit
them. It is no different in Lincoln Nebraska than in Austin Texas,
but this story is about Nebraska’s camp.
As I mentioned in my opener, seniors know what it is all about, which is why Bo Rudd, Husker senior returning starting linebacker His tank is filled. His house is clean, or at least reasonably clean. His cupboards are well stocked with peanut butter and bread and protein shakes. Shaving cream? Check. Toothpaste? Check. Deodorant? Check. Yes, plenty of deodorant. “Basically, the minute camp starts, I have everything I need,” Ruud said. “That way, I’m not scrambling and shopping or anything like that. It took years for me to learn. It makes a difference.” When you have 27 practices in 25 days, it doesn’t give you time to go to the store to buy essentials. Rudd even brings a blanket and pillow with him. A pillow and blanket you say, Rudd says, “just in case there’s time for a quick nap between practice and meetings and conditioning and video study and, well, you get the picture” “Guys are jealous when they see me with a pillow,” he said. “They’ll say, ‘Oh, gosh, I’ll pay you $10 for that.’ Wherever you can find an empty and dark room, you use it. I can sleep anywhere.” Sam Keller a 5th-year senior transfer from Arizona State says, “It is what it is, so make the best of it,” he said. “It’s really a good chance to get back in football shape. Get ready for the season. Get your feet underneath you. Get your body ready for football movements. You become dialed in on football. “Suddenly, you get dialed in as a player — not as a weight lifter or runner. This is where all of the work you did during the off-season kicks in.” “I’ll basically be living out of my locker this month, and going home to sleep,” he said. “As a fifth-year senior, you learn tricks of the trade . . . The key is, you eliminate the little things on your (to-do) list so you’re totally submerged into football. Nebraska’s first game this season is September 1st against Nevada who finished last year at 8-5 and return 13 starters.
