August 5, 2007 Linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton will miss the first three games of the season — Arkansas State, TCU and Central Florida — after both were charged with driving while intoxicated in separate incidents this summer, coach Mack Brown said. Along with their three-game suspensions, Kindle and Melton will be held out of the first couple of days of practice to visit with an unidentified woman whose child was crippled by a drunk driver. They also must perform community service, Brown said. Brown is attempting to police a team that is in risk of becoming University of Oklahoma "south" from back in Barry Switzer's days, or would they rather be referred to as the "farm team" of the Cincinnati Bengals. Beside the two mentioned players above, four UT football players were arrested: sophomore safety Robert Joseph, who has been dismissed from the team, was arrested in two separate incidents, and freshman defensive tackle Andre Jones was suspended indefinitely after being charged with aggravated robbery last week, as I reported on. But back to actual football. According to Brown at his press conference Sunday; "The issues with practice are still who is going to be the back-up quarterback. We have evolved far from the beginning of the summer, but it is still a wide-open race for that position and who will be the back-up tight end and tailback. Colt [McCoy] and Jamaal [Charles] have worked so hard this summer and they have both gained their weight, so they will have the opportunity to step-up and hopefully have banner years. Defensively, we are in a position where we have some older guys and younger guys in the secondary and linebacking core, so we will just have to separate all those guys. We also still have some issues with kicking at the moment.". It is a good thing they have such a "cream-puff" first 3 games or things might be tough on UT, I notice that the 2 players will be back just in time for the Oklahoma game. Surprise surprise as Gomer Pyle would say. Stay tuned, if I can dig up some more stuff regarding their practice, I'll be back!!
