As a fan of college recruiting...
{mosimage} As a fan of college recruiting I read a few things today concerning cheating in recruiting; about the customary allegations against Tennessee, speculation regarding Auburn, and an indictment of Michigan State under Saban. Of course you can't read about cheating without reading of Alabama's past problems. When you read this kindof stuff, then you get into posters who say they know certain things concerning cheating, confirming it is rampant and ongoing.Certainly you get to the point where someone says if you think football is bad, you ought to see basketball. Being a Buckeye fan I am sensitive to this as Coach Matta has started an amazing run of recruits to OSU. As a Buckeye, I just believe these young recruits have seen the light, but if you visit an opposing teams site you get a different perspective. How about the guard who originally committed to Illinois, and changed to Sampson and Indiana. No question what the forums in Illini Country thought about that. Certainly the allegation is out there that Gordon was bought. Of course considering the Illini, people out there consider the success of Coach Zook in recruiting to be suspect. How about Bobby Huggins in basketball? Does anyone doubt he will recruit where ever he is? Does anyone think the letter of the recruiting law is abided to by Huggins? My question isn't concerning the NCAA as I consider them about as competent as the IRS, but I do question where are the investigative reporters, where are the past athletes who "come clean"? We aren't talking about a couple of people here. We are talking about coaches, many players, and many people who make a living on recruiting. I would think that there are way to many people out there for this to be college sports little dirty secret. Hell, if I worked my tail off to get Johnny Allstar to play for me and then lost him to cheating U. it would honk me off. Would I remain silent about this? It wasn't that long ago that Phil Fulmer was rumored to have turned in Alabama. Yet, Tennesse is one onf the teams I always read about. The answer could be simple-no investigative reports because overall there is no cheating. There is much at stake. I know the whole steroids thing along with some other things have caused me to lose interest in baseball. How many football fans out there would quit the sport if it was dirty. Pretty sure I know one thing, Alabama didn't pay Saban a bizillion dollars to lose. OSU just spent about 21.5 million on their training complex. We are talking real money. Where am I going with this/ hell if I know. Most of us want to understand what we care about. When recruits choose A over B we wonder why. Money sure would be an explanation I would understand. I guess I just: A. Want to know what the deal really is, and B. If cheating is rampant, I just don't understand how and why it is kept so quiet. I would like to know the truth, unless the truth would tarnish my team of course. What got me on this subject today was the recruitment of phenom Terrell Pryor. Pryor is reported to be a Buckeye lean at this time. Concern was expressed that the Buckeye staff is nervous as Tennesse may become a late player in the battle for QB Pryor, and when Tennesse goes after someone, the playing field is not level. Again, have no clue, but would like to know.

Ah yes...what is it, Tennecheat? Ever since the illegal cleat incident, which still blows my mind that the refs turned a blind eye, is a big reason OSU fans don't trust the Volunteers. Anther name I hear all of the time is Auburn. I agree, it's amazing that if much of what we hear from "insiders" is true, than how the hell does it not get exposed more often. After the Clarrett stuff, OSU fans have been sensitive. Rules were being broken, but it does not seem they were all that extreme compared to what is rumored. Look at USC and Reggie Bush. Of course Bush cheated the system. Just like Vick like to watch dogs fight and Jose Canseco likes to "tell all." If cheating is going on so much, then where is baseball's version of Jose Canseco. From this fan's perspective, all teams bend the rules. Some schools more than others. And some schools are flat out cheating and it's bullshit. We hear the names, but where's the proof and where does the evidence go? |
