Ht: 6-1 Wt: 220 40: 4.45 UPDATE: John Clay’s status is undecided. There’s an NCAA rule that allows people to take extended hours after receiving their high school diploma. Interesting....
Could the quick-yet-powerful newcomer become the next great Badger running back? Fans will have to wait a year to find out. When you're talking about the Wisconsin offensive line, it's really not much different than the NFL's Denver Broncos in that the Badgers could seemingly plug anyone in and turn them into one of the Big Ten's rushing leaders. But as good as their offensive line has been, the running backs have been equally as good in the post-Barry Alvarez era. John Clay could be that next great back. He is a home state guy and one of the top 5 incoming running back recruits in the country. Unfortunately for Badgers fans who desperately want to see him, however, he has failed to qualify for 2007 and most likely will suit up for the first time in 2008. Clay is a bruiser at 220 pounds but also has the breakaway speed to take it the distance. And unlike most tall backs, the 6'1 Clay runs low to the ground yet still has the vision to find the open running lanes and get the most out of each carry. {youtube}Rq_5EtaxwkQ{/youtube} Even though Clay has some tough academic issues to sort out and might be rusty when he returns, he is the best RB to come out of the state of Wisconsin since Brian Calhoun, so he should still be a factor if he gets his studies up to snuff. Meanwhile, Wisconsin should be fine at backup RB with Lance Smith and freshman Zach Brown to back up P.J. Hill in 2007
